Description A Deinonychus raises her snout into the air, breathing in the scent of prey that she knows is nearby. Oblivious to the danger, a pair of primitive mammals scuffle in the shadows, knowing not that their seconds are numbered.

Watercolor practice... trying to teach myself something about this medium. It's slow going.

Oooh, watercolor. Those are difficult. Whenever I handle them it always turns into a big sloppy mess. You did an admirable job of keeping the details considering the medium.

Very nicely done.

JESUS CHRIST IT'S A RAPTOR GET IN THE CAR.

I like how this came out, shading in watercolor is difficult to master (for me, anyway). The squinty look in her eye is great, too. She's a-concentratin'.

The face on Ix came out really well. Layering with watercolors is a BITCH (one of the reasons why I don't using them), so bravo on the entire piece. I think I'd jam a brush into my eye just attempting this.

I think this is really good for watercolor practice. Especially the texture on the trees and the lighting. Wonderful job!

Thanks. The tree trunk textures were sort of experimental, but I'll try doing more of them next time.

Even with watercolor, you got the texture of the plants, tree bark and animals down well.

She looks like a tyrannosaurus or allosaurus compared to them. Hairy little things. Blegh.

I'm commenting on how puny the disgusting little vermin are.

If you put Ix and/or Cayro in that scene, that will be greater.

Did mammals live during the same time as raptors? Either way, I love the piece. Especially how she's in the background, but pretty much still the main focus of attention.

EWilloughby In reply to floppybelly [2008-12-18 08:07:03 +0000 UTC]

Yep. The first true mammals evolved in the early Jurassic, though for a long time before that there were very similar-looking therapsids, like cynodonts. Mammals remained for the most part very small and rodent-like until the end of the Cretaceous.

Wow, I think this is really beautiful.. Your watercolor skills are fab. What I like about watercolor is that you don't have to have precise control to make something really awesome... But, I love the way the fur came through, also lighting, as usual is really nice.

Miss you

This is pretty nice if you're beginning with watercolors. It doesn't allow all details you can have with color pencils. I gave up with watercolors...

you got the shadowed area down good while still focusing on the two rodents.
