Yup yup! At the time I didn't have one.. I did have a rotary cutter but that cut the fibers D: .. thus I improvised! I picked up an exacto knife after the fact and have used it ever since for fur projects! I've thought about making a redux for this tut with more modern techniques, but it's been up so long at this point
Hope your ears turned out well if you made any!

I really like the idea of the wire in the ear to keep it standing, next time I make new fur gear, I'll have to try that out.

Thanks! I figured the wire would allow me to put the ears in different poses.. sad, happy, whatever needed

I was wondering, do you have a tumblr that this is posted on that I can reblog from? If not, could I please post it to mine, I promise to credit you, I would just really like to share this on my cosplay blog. It's completely fine if you don't want me to though.

I tried to make some bear ears for a cosplay and this tutorial really helped me :3
BUt i've got one problem - how can I sew the hair pins on the ears?
D:

I sew three bobby pins for each ear. I use regular thread and needle to wrap a tight loop around the U shape of the pin, fastening it to the edge of the ear. I sew one pin on the top of the curve of the ear, and the other two on each side.
When putting the ears on, I first place the top pin in horizontally through the hair. I then put in the front side pin, down vertically. Finally I put the back side pin down vertically.
Pins only work well if they stay nice in your hair regularly, or if you are wearing a wig and netted wig cap. I stay really well if you're wearing a wig and net cap.
Hope that explains some! Good luck!

I'm confused on how to put it on bobby pins or a headband or anything..haha i fail.

Bobby pins work best if you are using a wig and cap. Bobby pins can be sewn on by looping thread several to a dozen times around the pin loop. I put three on each ear for mine. One on top and one on each side of the ear.
As far as a headband, it could be incorporated when attaching the craft wire by extending the wire beyond the bottom of the ear and wrapping around the band.. if that makes sense.

AWESOME!!!!
little tip, when cutting fur use a razor. The cut is cleaner and faster then the seam ripper

That would work well too.. much like working with animal hides. I didn't have a razor at my disposal, so seam ripper it was!

This is pretty freakishly awesome... it doesn't seem too hard, either! These would work for any sort of cosplay, not just Loveless, right?

This tutorial is great, because there are many characters with cat-like ears. And it looks so quick and easy. I will totally use this for Halloween next year. Super cute too!

Woooo, I'm so sorry! I randomly die and come back to life.. ~__~;;
To use these style with real hair is a bit tricky. They can be attached to a head band either by sewing or in how you fashion the craft wire. I was avoiding the head band look I've seen quite a bit. You may try to attach them to hair clips.. again, either by finding clips you can sew them onto or by craft wire.
If you went a clip route, you'll have to use at least two, if not three per ear to get them to stay in place and not flop around. This is the same reason why I used three hair pins on each ear to stabilize them on my wig.

what about putting it on a headband and then on head and using hair to cover?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
exailious In reply to KatyKatastrophic [2011-03-29 23:39:04 +0000 UTC]
I've heard some do the same to success. I guess it just depends on the size of the band and the amount of hair available to cover. Would work nice for long hair!

exailious In reply to KatyKatastrophic [2011-03-30 03:15:30 +0000 UTC]
Then perhaps find a band that is close to your original hair color and cover it best as possible?
