Description Decided to break out the watercolors the other night, so I doodled this guy up. I haven't thought of a name for him, but my friend ~xNakisax suggested I call him "Juandissimo, Intergalactic Casanova" haha, it sort of stuck.

His head shape is based heavily on the other lobstery dudes I drew a while back. His body is also very dinosaury, mainly because I feel that an evolved raptor-like body plan would be successful. I am a big fan of alternative evolution where the mass extinction didn't occur and dinosaurs, usually raptors or something similar, evolved to be the dominant species rather than hominids.

Well made! The only problem that I see is that he may be a bit front heavy which that big head being that far out.

I think the neck would be less stuck out anyway, more erect.

Ooh, which one? Send me a link to your guy! I like the idea of flying sophonts.

Interesting, but his body plan looks a little awkward for bipedal locomotion. It looks like he would be more comfortable moving around on all fours and standing on his hind legs to use his manipulators (I guess they count as hands). I'm sure he could move bipedally, but I imagine it being more of a slow lumbering motion than anything usefully quick.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

exo-bio In reply to ArtOfAnrach [2013-01-06 06:52:23 +0000 UTC]

He certainly doesn't look fast, no. But his body plan really isn't finished, this was something I drew pretty fast and didn't do many corrections on. His abdomen is sort of bulky and would slow him down I'd imagine.

ArtOfAnrach In reply to exo-bio [2013-01-06 23:45:10 +0000 UTC]

I saw in previous comments that you mentioned a tail. This guy is supposed to be dinosauroid, so why not take the same principle as dinosaur tails? I read somewhere that they weren't really flexible at all and acted as a counterbalance for their massive sizes in many species. This guy wouldn't need a large tail, just one heavy enough to act as a counterbalance. It could even serve as storage for fat, providing both nutrients for hard times and the weight for a counterbalance.

exo-bio In reply to ArtOfAnrach [2013-01-07 02:06:27 +0000 UTC]

I wanted to make him look insectoid as well as dinosauroid, so kept with the insect like abdomen. I didn't want him to look just like a modified theropod with a bug face.

KatWylder [2013-01-06 06:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Hooray for alternate bipeds!

Looking at the way the torso seems to lean slightly forward, and the stubby middle digit on this guy's hand, one of the first things that came to mind for me is dinos like maiasaura. I'm guessing from that stance--and your comments below--that this species might walk or rest on all fours at times?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

exo-bio In reply to KatWylder [2013-01-06 06:54:12 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, they switch from being on fours, to mid stance, seen here, and the erect stance where they balance far more on their back legs, I imagined that their abdomen would act as a sort of weigh that kept them bottom heavy and more balanced, rather than top heavy and wobbly.

Perhaps the locomotion of Iguanodon can be of use to further define how exactly he'd walk? After all, Iguanodon also had a quadruped stance when moving and a bipedal stance when being alerted or using its hands.

Definitely, I had a four armed version of this guy, which looked sort of neat, but was on the impractical side. I'll post a few versions.

angeluscaligo In reply to exo-bio [2013-01-06 16:00:59 +0000 UTC]

For one, a design can never be impractical, otherwise it wouldn't be used For example, in my world-building project I have crystal-covered trees. That would seem an impractical design, but on the world itself, it's a logical and working design

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

exo-bio In reply to angeluscaligo [2013-01-06 16:23:25 +0000 UTC]

Crystal covered trees doesn't sound impractical to me! You could totally make that work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

angeluscaligo In reply to exo-bio [2013-01-06 20:56:36 +0000 UTC]

It does work They're a form of tree that lives on a super-earth that orbits a red dwarf star and have to deal large amounts of UV. Via the crystal bark, they reflect a large quantity of that radiation and redirect light via the bark into the ground where it enables photosynthesis for small plants, creating large layered woods that glow in the moonlight

Ah, Juandissimo, what a lady killer. You know he gets all the intergalactic space babes. I also think he looks a little forward heavy. But that's okay, the ladies still love him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

exo-bio In reply to xNakisax [2013-01-06 06:07:40 +0000 UTC]

He may be a bit heavy in the front, but he lifts up his front half a bit to manipulate things. Also, his back end is a bit of counter balance, though I suppose it'd probably need to be longer to do any good.

Still a lady killer.

PeteriDish In reply to Doodlebotbop [2013-10-18 13:28:37 +0000 UTC]

doesn't matter. all bipeds are only kinetically ballanced anyways. (only stable when in motion, just like a bike or a motorcycle) when walking, the feet will be continually being put under the center of gravity, and when standing still, muscle strength will do. This creature still makes perfect sense in terms of biomechanics
