George “Digger” Harkness in this Elseworld Universe is the son of an an Australian mother and American military officer who visited Australia while on a vacation leave trip. Harkness spent his preteen years being raise in Australia with his mother before finally coming to live in America with his father as a teen. It was during his youth in Australia that Harkness develop his ability and expertise with the boomerang. Once he came to America as a teen he began to develop a taste for the fast life, which earned him somewhat of a dubious reputation as a trouble maker among his peers and residents where he resided much to the consternation and embarrassment of his father. When Harkness turns eighteen, his father, in an attempt to get him to follow a respectable path, pulled some strings by way of his military connections sets Harkness into enlisting in the Army. Harness’s skills and abilities that he developed as a child with the boomerang also seemed to extend to all weapons in general as he discovered he both excelled and reveled in their use. But his military career did nothing to curb his love of trouble but rather it increased his taste for women, drink and conflict. Harkness found himself in career dire straights because of excesses and if not for the timely intervention of General Wade Eiling he would have found himself facing both a military court martial as well as prison time. Eiling was in charge of putting together a team of meta and non meta humans to serve as a US government controlled alternative and counter to the then neophyte Justice League, who answered to no country or government authority, should they prove ever to be a threat. Harkness’s weapons skills were seen as a possible asset to this team that was to operate under the code name of Task Force X and thus brought aboard by Eiling. Outfitted with a uniform that would protect him against any conventional firearms or bladed attack as well a special weaponized boomerangs Harkness was given the official code name of Outback, but he took to sarcastically referring to himself as “Captain Boomerang” and the name unofficially stuck among Harkness and his fellow recruits of Task Force X. But this initial formation of Task Force X hit a brick wall due to two of its recruits who gained enhanced abilities and becoming threats in their own rights. The fallout from this lead to the disbanding of this incarnation of Task Force X and Harkness absconding with his “Captain Boomerang” uniform and weapons and deciding to hire himself out for profit and his love of conflict as a mercenary/bodyguard for high powered and wealthy underworld crime figures and organizations. It was in this capacity as a body guard for one of the self styled crime bosses attempting to establish an operations base within the twin cities of Central/Keystone that he ran afoul of the Flash. Boomerang was unable to prevent the Flash from capturing his employer and putting an end to his plans and it was by sheer luck manage to evade capture himself in this initial encounter, but he enjoyed the thrill and challenge of engaging the Flash that he has gone on to now engage in criminal activities in order to match his wits and skills against the Flash on a regular basis for the thrill he gets from the encounters.
