Description ...on the way home from work last night.

Firstly, if this isn't considered street please let me know and consider me suitably chastised. I figured I can see my TA parked, so..

I wasn't planning on submitting this but there's a bit of a yarn to go with it.

Me and the young bloke dropped into the local-ish shopping centre to pick up a few necessities like Wild Turkey, beer, film and a few luxuries like food. You know the type of place I'm talking about. Full of big multi-national companies that have forced the local businesses out of the market making you drive twice as far to not find a park only to realise a man can no longer buy more than one type of black and white fucking film!

So I see this vision of their stairless way to oblivion and, ooh it made me wonder, and I grabbed the wide angle, 'cause the stores were all closed and I didn't get what I came for.

I started rattling off a few shots digitally with a view to maybe bringing the tripod the next time I need to buy some shit I don't want and, at the very least, getting a clean shot or two. Me and my little clone were having a great time doing moving stairless way stunts and clowning around until...

Out the corner of my eye I spotted a rent-a-cop swiftly descending from oblivion while another was smartly covering the second exit. The third musta been having a doughnut break 'cause instinctively checking the reflection over my shoulder there was no-one to be seen. That's the last time I park the getaway mobile in the wrong disabled spot!

I pleaded ignorance and claimed that shooting in a public place was not against the law. Private Constable One, who had obviously read more than his Maglite manual, correctly informed me private property was otherwise. He even asked me twice if he could ask me what I was photographing. "Arty farty shit, mate." Private Probationary Constable Two smiled.

Anyway, all ended well after a discussion about privacy laws and me pointing out all their surveillance cameras, two of which had been stolen (obviously unmonitored), and we unanimously agreed the world was fucked and if I wanna do more shoots use a camera phone or just ask first if using a big arsed SLR. Apparently the management implemented a camera ban after a media crew ran amok. Fuckin' Mike Moore wannabes!

Moral of the story?

Drop a print off, buy a Leica and go back at Christmas time!

a story that happens to all of us at one time. I admire your attitude.

I was caught by a security guard and the guy took my film away, then I remembered this deviation haha.

Felt pretty rotten and the guy was a complete arse. Lucky I didn't have anything important.. well except for the photos of my mates down in melb. Damn I'm pissed

Oh no! Bad luck mate! They have no right to do that, not even the coppers. I meant to test out the weird arsed rules Melbum has on their privatised railways now but I was having too much fun out the front of the station and forgot all about it!

The only way they'll get my camera is to pry it from my cold, dead fingers! (touch wood)

The story really turns this into a street shot, rather than just an artsy fartsy shot

Indeed! It started out on one track and wound up on another!

That is a really nicely composed photo. I like the foreground a lot. The lighting and contrast really set this off in a good way.

Thanks Andrew. That's what I was seeing. It's amusing that the people who get paid to see, the security guards, couldn't see it.

when I saw this piece all I could say was WOW. The angle, the light, both the presence of symmetry and asymmetry... it's gorgeous. I love.

Lovely symmetry.
Liked the story too
rent-a-cops suck.
At the mall I go to there's a random bathtub on display. And every once in a while my friends and I like to model it. And we never get in trouble for climbing all over the bathtub, just for photographing it.

f-hole In reply to dynasourX [2006-11-19 23:49:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks darl. I like how it's not quite symmetrical too.

I'm gunna test their sense of humour and try to get the guard standing next to the new no camera signs on the doors!

Great story and I like the photo. Well framed and looks very 1970.

I once got thrown out of a supermarket for taking photos of fruit, the guard said something about management rules and lawsuits blah, blah, blah.
But usually I can get away with it in shopping malls as long as I am not blatantly standing in front of a guard and shooting.

junoknight [2006-11-13 16:08:15 +0000 UTC]

btw, that sucks. i hate it when authorities like to throw around their... authority. photography is harmless, especially if you're not capturing any copyrighted logos or anything. <_> sorry that happened to you mate

f-hole In reply to junoknight [2006-11-14 08:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate, it's an honour!

I got lured back there on the weekend and not only had Liquorland (the lesbian grog shop?) been taken over and they upped the price of beer and Wild Turkey by 15% but I got tailed by security too! I was even cameraless! The memory in my phone was full and I couldn't grab a shot with that either!

I've been told since that there's now signs of a camera with a little red circle and cross on the doors. I didn't notice. I don't notice the other ones when I go to pay for petrol with my, open face, bike helmet on either. Fuck idiots and their rules that defy logic!

Photo rights... Always a point of contention... Especially in a country where people are educated by the idiot box more than anything else. (How many people in Aus think that the cops have to do that whole "You have a right to remain silent...." thing? I mean, there is an equivalent Australian warning, but not what people expect.)

I can't remember whether you sent me the link or not, but ht tp://photorights.4020.net has a terrific summary of NSW law and photography. When doing street photography from now on I will be carrying a few printouts of the PDF they have there - to try and educate the masses...

Cool story, though. Having had a few close calls myself (the wonders of being able to check the reflection over your shoulder off the LCD screen - life-saver) I had a bit of a giggle.

Interesting shot too - very clean, clinical, impersonal lines to the building. You do get the feeling of being sucked into the consumer void.

f-hole In reply to Lucanos [2006-11-04 03:21:15 +0000 UTC]

True, and it's not just on the idiot box, man, it's everywhere. New world order, propaganda, conditioning, call it what you want, it's here and the sheep are gobbling it up!

Yes, the photorights site is one of the best sites I have accidentally stumbled upon. It's been bookmarked, printed and passed on here too.

I fear, however, our days are numbered. With the conditioning of the sheep to accept more and more rules without question and the increasing restrictions being placed on such things as photographing buildings in full public view, it can only get worse.

That well worn quote of Mr Franklin springs to mind, "Those who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security."

Of course, we mustn't forget Mr Orwell either!

yeah we had the same thing when we had a net meet a few years back, we all met up at the caffeteria, at frankston, bayside, and the funny thing is, all we were doing was taking pictures of our friends faces. a security guard came up and told us to stop taking photos but couldnt tell us why, just that he understands that its not allowed.

ok no problem, so we went outside and conveniently stood underneath a no standing zone sign, and got a group shot there.. lol it was a funny day.
