A quickly thrown together tutorial just to show the practical applications of Gradient Maps for painting purposes.
I would still do some paint overs or even use multiple gradient maps to get your desired colored effect. But this is a good way of quickly getting a LOT of color experimenting done in like a minute. This is about as close as Photoshop gets to a βmake artβ button.

I looked all over the internet for this, I couldn't remember what it was called. I serached for hue, colour color replacement bird parrot and all sorts of things, but finally someone mentioned "gradient map" and I found it on DA :3
I think I saw it on tumblr originally, hell to find anything there.

Ooh, colouring like in the second image is pretty much what has been putting me off working with greyscales, but with this gradient map trick I can see it suddenly becoming a lot of fun

Yeah same here. It didn't really feel like it was preserving my values well and everything just looked kind of pale and meh. It requires a shitton of touchups. I might as well just start from color.
But with gradient maps, my "touchups" are really more like adding spot colors. It's much easier to avoid a muddy picture too.

I've been having trouble moving forward on a painting of mine for a month now. Just wasn't sure what wasn't working on it for me. I threw down a few gradient maps and messed with the settings and am now well on my way moving forward! Messing with colours and contrast so easily and quickly REALLY helped me out - thanks for the tip!

BBA has been put on hiatus and probably will get retooled into a later comic project we're working on right now. Kay is great.
