"Perhaps I can help you find the words you're looking for," the Hellbinder continues. "You are terrified, Scholarling. Frightened almost beyond speech, and sensing the danger in our presence, you grabbed ahold of the experiences and training that have been impressed into your mind over years of disciplined effort. You have gained knowledge about us, about what we are, what we do, and why we do it. You have learned of our distinctive pasts. And in desperation you have sought to use that knowledge by engaging us in a duel of words and ideas, invoking the concept of a bargain and proposing it to us in the hope that it would hold some interest."

The massive figure straightens above her, keeping its eye fixed on her face. "But the creature Jervil is no more, and to bargain with us is to make a deal with a forest fire. You will burn, Scholarling. You will only burn." A clenching of the monstrous fist before the Scholar's face brings a raveling of rope that quickly assumes a recognizable form. The weapon is part cat-o' nine-tails, part flail, each tentacle of rope waving like a massive tongue that licks dark lips in anticipation. Elina draws back in alarm, her hands pulled away from the thing's touch. "Yes," the Hellbinder says with satisfaction, "this behavior is more genuine. You wish to flee. But the time for that is days past."
