Description For Round 3 of MDH

Baseless

Edit: Right. Have decided I will talk about this afterall XD

So Round 3 Theme was masquerade.

Went digging through victorian fashion plates for evening gown inspiration. Decided to doll a modified version of this pink dress . The pink dress was from a slightly later period than I wanted, more late Victorian, so I had to tweak the silhouette a bit :S ... The tiered ruffles, short sleeves and wide V neckline are consistent with evening gowns of the time. (yay wiki! XD)

Stuck with the brown green colour scheme.

Ruffles nearly killed me. Nightmare to doll - I imagine it must have been a nightmare to sew at the time too.. poor victorian seamstresses...

Background colours are muted cos her dress is so vibrant I didn't want anything to compete with that... And because I wanted to evoke the soft background feeling found in fashion plates... not sure if that came through though :S mostly it just looks a bit bland XD... Still I like the vase of flowers

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your kind comments and favs!!!

This is such a beautiful picture. I like the amount of detail you put into her dress. The background looks delicate and pretty, but allows the focus to remain on the character. Nice job with this picture.

I legitimately said (rather loudly) "Holy shit!" when I say this.
And I'm in class right now, btw xD;

ANYWAY, this is so amazing! At first glance it looks like a fully rendered Photoshop drawing, and not a piece that was made pixel by pixel. You have amazing skill, and you definitely deserve the DD you got for this!

This is really pretty but I do have to say a little something critique-wise... The length of the bottom of the dress makes her appear as if she's on stilts... it is more than half her body height which makes it appear as if her feet are not touching the ground. Because of that she seems a bit too petite up top and hence the feeling of stilts for me. I think if it were say two ruffle rows shorter it would appear to fit her better :] Just my thoughts ^^ It's quite beautiful tho

Into-Oblivion97 In reply to Ravenwolf89 [2011-10-11 16:32:26 +0000 UTC]

I have to disagree with you :3
I tried to count how many head-heights she was from head to bottom of dress, and reached 8 (an average persons height is equal to about 6-8 times their head), so considering that the dress is very voluminous and the possibility that she might be wearing footwear that elevate her slightly, i think her height seems reasonable.
It might be a question of opinion or style preferance...

Ravenwolf89 In reply to Into-Oblivion97 [2011-10-11 17:09:57 +0000 UTC]

When I was taught to draw humans I was always told that the legs from where they attach are approximately half the length of the body. Even with foot wear on the heels would have to be several inches beyond what heels are normally. So this plus the fact she was drawn rather slender on top means that the way the dress looks makes her appear much taller than she would normally be even in high heels. Someone that is 6ft tall still have legs that are approximately half their full height. This girl appears to have slightly longer than what it should be. Not saying it's a huge difference. Just a small one. And that's just my opinion :] Also voluminous skirts can be drawn to look voluminous without being so long that the person wearing them is taller then they should be.

That is correct- i replied to my own comment correcting myself, forgetting that you wouldn't be able to see my reply to myself. XD

You are right about that, when drawing a realitic person the legs make up approximately half the length of the body. What i forgot to add is that some people use a drawing style in which the character that is drawn may have very long legs, this could be an example of that, i haven't seen the rest of the artist's gallery, so i don't know if they tend to draw in such a way, but it's a guess. :3

Yeah I know when people design for fashion they elongate the frame etc. :] I just felt that it looked odd. lol. I know other people have different opinions tho so yeah ^^ It's just a matter of taste really :] I felt that this person was trying to make it realistic based off their artist comment about matching the dress to the era etc. so that's why I mentioned the height ^^

Into-Oblivion97 In reply to Ravenwolf89 [2011-10-25 19:58:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, i see! Well, she told me in a reply that she elongated the legs on purpose. But i can see why you might think so, she does seem to be very focused on details.
Anyways, it's just a minor misunderstanding. X3
