Another North British locomotive I did in my home country for New Zealand Railways.

This time on Ja 1275, one 16 of these North British Oil-fired Ja's built for NZR for the North Island, much the same as the J's of 1939 and later the Hillside Ja when they were first introduced in 1946 on the South Island after the war.

Built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1951, and entered service on July 19th 1952, the Oil-fired Ja's were mainly based in the Auckland region, running south from Auckland to Taumarunui, running north to Whangarei and Otiria, and running east to Paeroa and Rotorua, despite been the most reliable and free-running performances on the North Island in the 1950s for hauling express passenger service.

But their service was about to be short lived, when the diesels were taken over their service on the Main Trunk line in the mid 1960s and many of these oil burning Ja's, were later transferred to the Bay of Plenty, were they remained there until their days on in March 1968, after 17 years of service.

Ja 1275 the sole surviving 16 North British (Oil-fired) Ja was withdrawn from service on December 16th 1967, after hauling the last Steam excursion on the North Island until it was sold to Les Hostick of Hamilton, and in August was displayed at the former Te Awamutu Railway Museum were it remain there for 20 years.

When the Te Awamutu Museum closed in 1994, it was decided to move the locomotive to a safer place (along with Bb 144 and Ba 552 later followed by Ja 1267) at Mainline Steam Trust (owned by Ian Welsh) and it was restored to full working order in 2004 and it has been running ever since.

Ja1275 is now preserved at Mainline Steam, Plimmerton, New Zealand πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ
