Description

Inspired by the outstanding saga "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin, this work depicts a military victory of the House Stark, guided in battle by Robb.
I'm really honoured that Mr. George R.R. Martin's himself decided to host this work on his website. You can see it here: georgerrmartin.com/grrm_fromfa…

Acrylics, watercolours, coloured pencils on paper.

Incredible friggin' detail once again. I especially like how you drew the Stark wolf on the banner, Grey Wind chomping on someone, and the Lannister head rolling is a nice touch, although I do like the Lannisters I'm sorry to admit. Everything horrible keeps happening to the Starks, and I admit I admire the Lannisters for pulling off all they have. Although I will always hate Joffrey. Always.

Also, the detail in the foreground of the piece and the more blended, vague background in the back looks great, and I think it is a nice touch as well. You have a wonderful style, and I'm glad I found your art.

Thanks again for your kind comment! I don't like the Lannister that much, but they are all greatly detailed character in the book. Well, I like Tyrion, to tell the truth...

You are most welcome; you deserve it.

I understand why you wouldn't like the Lannisters, and I see why you would like Tyrion.

armor details are stunning, i spent almost half an hour absorbing details til overload, got a sorta abstract feeling...it's kinda in line with how artists depicted events in similar times like from the war of the roses (one of the inspirations for this amazing saga) looking forward to more artwork whenever able!!!

What an incredibly clever cropping you used, with the horse's head... this creates such a strong dynamic, it makes the whole work look like an action shot, taken RIGHT there, in the middle of all of it... it makes the viewer want to stand aside, so that the chopped off head and doesn't land on top of them.... and to avoid the horse, stomping on them.

such an amazing work, with such powerful use of colour, yet again, and all the other things I said in the comment before...

Thank you for your words, I've been meaning to reply for ages, but always seem to run out of time. I truly believe that if someone goes through as much meticulous, heart-felt, intricate work, and put so much soul into a piece as you have, people must take the time to really understand what it is they love about it, why it affects them the way it does, and put it into words for the artist to know and feel their gratitude - after all, every piece of art that we love is a gift from its creator - another precious jewel for us to put into our mental treasure chest of beautiful things. So thank you back, for my jewels

hahahaha, thank you for that - you made my super sucky day much less sucky i'd send you sydney sunshine, but it's night now, so you'll have to do with sydney moonshine instead (whichever kind). the crescent hangs horizontally here, rather than vertically, like back home, in europe, so i guess it's still worth sending! have a good day, Father Stone!

phantomwriter05 [2010-07-24 16:27:59 +0000 UTC]

I'm still on the first book but I truely didn't appricate the character till the Bran chapter when he rides off to war with the flowing banner next to him with him in his armor and helmet on his warhorse with greywind by his side.

Mr. Martain painted a really heroic picture of the character off to fight Cersei and rescue his sister and father.

I have a question though is this in a certain battle or is this a general painting?

PS. I hope that they get that heroic portion of the book in the series

FatherStone In reply to phantomwriter05 [2010-07-27 14:24:20 +0000 UTC]

yes, I started to appreciate the character at the same point as you did.
This doesn't depict a specific battle, just one of the many that Robb fought against the Lannisters.

I hope the same about the series!

Dude, this is great, altough I will never forgive Martin for killing the Young Wolf. Robb with his Grey Wind was my favorite character. I just finished second part of the saga, the "Clash of Kings" and noticed that there is not one chapter with Robb's name and later, in the appendix saw that he was slain in the Red Wedding...for a freakin moment I seriously considered to stop reading the saga all together, but changed my mind. Once again, excellent job man.

Thank you so much, mate. It's always nice to read comments coming from a fan of ASOIAF. Robb's death made me really sad, but I think it is perfect for the story Mr. Martin wanted to tell.

This is a fantastic picture, and my favourite of the three so far, I think, though the Red Wedding certainly has a lot in it that it's hard to take it all in with one view. I never read the series, I stopped partway through the first book because it just wasn't my thing but I do get some of the general feel from your pictures.

FatherStone In reply to JesterSeven [2008-05-24 12:48:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your comment, mate! When I was painting this one, I read the chapter again and again. My pourpose was to put in the image all the elements I can from that part of the book. I'm glad you think the feel is fitting whit the story. It's an honour and a great compliment for me. Thanks.

Ratzgoblin [2008-05-21 19:03:12 +0000 UTC]

I almost cannot believe, this was not created with PS/Painter (but I have to admit, that I haven't any experience with the stated tools of trade above). This looks fantastic - and same for the other artworks of this style (I dont wanna spam all around ).

If you let me to babble on (^^) :
The thick outlines, the stylizes hair, blood and armour and the human faces, too, makes this image appear as some kind of "story-telling wall-painting" to me (ehrm, wall-painting is maybe a bad choice to make a comparison; this shall not be meant in a negative way at all!!). I am thinking of sorta medieval paintings, showing bloody battles, empereor-coronations or other documentary painting (that's why it doesnt have to be painted on a wall).

And, I have to confess, you showed me with this, what I really want. I wasnt sure about how to "color" my current WIP (the circle-o-hatred thing). I wanted an appearance like an ancient story-telling wall-paining. I tried already some kind of embossment (as if it was engraved) and something like a coloration similar to an Egyptian-wallpicture. But I wasn't satisfied at all.

Now, that I see this wonderful piece of art, I know, where I wanna go. I assure you, I dont(!) mean by this, that I want to copy your work or something brain-leeching like this. I even doubt, I'll ever get close to it. But this is some great inspiration to me...

Outstanding, beautiful work! You know, it makes me so happy to find such original works around DA.

You are very talented indeed, great use of color, line, composition and shadding. It vaguely looks like a vitral, and would perfectly fit the pages of a great book.

Grazie mille, davvero!
