"The key which unlocks the answers to the questions of life, the key which truly answers life's questions, is the realisation of that what the heart speaks of always is the truth. This realisation is paramount, for once in everyone's life there will be a time when the outcome, the contents of the story's last page, only will be known once the story has been told. For, in life, there are no shortcuts, and what it all comes down to, in the end, is of what the heart's wise words speak."

The Beauty in Doubt is very much a reflection of my view of my own person: she is a reflection of both what I see and what I wish to see.

Like the Beauty, I am blind to the answers of life's questions. I am blue-eyed, and equally naΓ―ve, often to an extent bordering ridicule.
Though my hair is light, I wish it was even more so, as I greatly miss the colour my first strands of hair were, back when my mind was innocent. As time passed, my mind was stained by reality, and my hair darkened.
Despite the symbols which are featured by her headpiece and earring: clarity (the crystalline jewels) and innocence (the pearls) she can not see clearly. She, herself, is symbolised by the intricate patterns (again, the headpiece) painted by the course her life already has taken, and the future, to which she is blind.

The Beauty in Doubt is a personal character of mine, one whom I hope to one day give the most thought-through of stories. Until then, she will remain an elusive creature of my imagination, being the person I see every day in the mirror, as well as being the person who I wish my reflection would show.

_______________________________________________

This piece took... Too long. For four days have I been seated, in front of the computer. Four afternoons have turned into early mornings, all while this piece flowed from my tablet pen. I lost her once, I lost her twice, but I never lost her a third time. And now she is here.

This is my most worked-through piece, ever. Never have I cared this much about a picture. Not a single colour was left unblended, not a strand of her golden hair was allowed to flow where it should not.

Though it would be my greatest wish to see her portrayed with great realism, such a task is not for me to carry out. Life-like realism will never be my most treasured of skills. Over the years, I have come to realise that stylism is what makes my heart skip a beat. More realistic than a cartoon, more minimalistic than a realistic piece. This way, I can accentuate some features while minimising the ones which do not matter. In the end, the result will please me.

Though I do not find this piece perfect, I appreciate it greatly, and I believe that it is my best piece this far.

And yes, I know she has no eyebrows. Though it was not my original intention to strip her of such an important feature, I found out that her beauty was greater without them. Eyebrows are truly my nemesis. One day, I will defeat them on the battlefield of my digital canvases, but that day was not today and the Beauty in Doubt was not the place for such a battle to be carried out.

Finally, I would greatly appreciate it if you told me what it is that you see in her doubtful eyes?

Wow, this piece is wonderful.. at first it looks so unusual but then when I looked through it, i did know it somehow reflected you....and your story is soo...wow. You definitely put a lot of thought in your artwork! I really like it despite it has no eyebrows ^___^ Your expressionism as an artist evidently shows.

I agree with xbrokenabyss: there is something in her eyes and expression I cant put my finger on!

Either way, she is gorgeous. The hair is so beautiful and delicate. You are very talented!

This is truly beautiful. I've spent everyday since you first placed this wonderful picture here on dA trying to type what I see in her eyes, and yet I fail with each attempt. I deeply apologize for my lack of a response, it was in no way meant to be an offense against your lovely work. The lack of response, as I have said, was due to my inability to give a proper critique of what I see in her eyes.

Please, do continue to create these beautiful works. I, for one, do enjoy looking at these, and I'll be sure to show this one to my art teacher the next time I see her.

Thank you immensely for such an amazing comment. Do not worry over the comments you wish to leave however - I have always been fairΓΆy good at understanding what people intend to say even when they never say it directly. Thus, I know that your comment is beautiful and for that I am most graetful and appreciative.

Thank you for the encouragement!

Also, the look in her eyes is highly ambiguous, so you should not worry for not being able to fully voice what it is you see in her eyes. It may be all emotions ranging from sadness to the feelings of true love. Once the series is complete, the meaning will be yet more clear.

Ah, that would make sense. Yay! Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing the complete series.

You are in turn welcome.

The next picture in the series of three is upcoming... I am about half-done, and then my tablet decided freezing would be a marvellous idea. Yeah. I am not amused.

A few re-boots later (which I have been too lazy to complete) the problem should be corrected, however.

I appreciate technology, but I do not love it. - And yet I spend my days in front of a piece of it nevertheless. - Well, I have never been totally sane or easy to understand.

One day I will get myself a petroleum lamp (that runs of wax because of the otherwise foul smell). Then I will go old-fashioned for real never to be considered fully sane once more. 8D

M'dear, it was sarcasm. However, that is the way of the world in these times, to rely on technology. I don't quite think anyone was. XD

XD
Why don't you just use candles? They are much cheaper and of more abundance.

Amazing. You can really see the dedication in this piece. I love the story and concept behind this piece as well. I think everyone has that creature or alter ego that we wished we could all be, the person that stares back at us in the mirror.

The thing I see in her eyes is more a dewy eyed stare. I don't see doubt at all, but a sly smirk. It reminds of Mona Lisa, but in a more modern. It has that same mysterious air to. What going on in that head?

Feathers-of-Love In reply to Zaffco [2008-08-07 13:16:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you greatly for such an elaborate comment. I am most grateful.

Her gaze is very much ambiguous. Though it may be coloured by doubt, she knows deep inside what it is that her heart desires, and thus, she smiles. The challenge is to actually realise what it is that inspires the doubt and correct it.

Your analysis is also very much appreciated. It is indeed so that we all have an alter ego we desire to be more like. I however see that as a healthy sign of a good character - that one knows what one's flaws are and that one may aspire to be more like the person of one's dreams.

Once more, thank you for your kind and elaborate comment!

Woah, this turned out absolutely gorgeous, Josy ^__^

I can hardly believe you've improved so much! Not only have you drawn a human portrait very well, but it also shows emotion, the exact emotion you wanted to portray: doubt. She looks like she's looking at something she wants but is not allowed to have, or something like that, I think. There is some sort of sadness in her eyes and expression. I greatly admire you for being able to show that. Very well done.

I think also that you have improved very much in other things: for instance the blending of colours and the reflection of colours on each other. I always think that that is one of the most important things to learn in terms of art- to understand light and the way it hits objects and reflects colours.

Very well done piece. Thumbs-up from me =]

Thank you immensely for such a wonderful comment!

Your words make me very happy, for even if one may doubt one's own abilities at times, others do not as their eyes are unobscured by the disbelief one so often houses for oneself. Further, I am glad that you think I have managed to give her an appropriate expression as that was what I doubted I had succeeden in when the picture was done.

Oh, and thank you. I realised that painting with many colours - knowledge which has lingered in the back of my mind without me ever tending to it - is just too much fun! To add some blue among the wheat and some pink among the blue. It was just amazingly fun!

Thank you, once more.

Wow, you've really outdone yourself!
I love your human art as much as your giraffes
I see ... a loss of some kind, in her eyes. She seems to be missing something, holding something back... mirrored in the pursing of her lips.
The hair is so beautiful

Indeed she is missing something, and holding something back. I am glad you spotted that. I had a hard time making her eyes convey the correct emotion. I yet have not fullt succeeded, but your comment will keep me content.

I am glad you enjoy the hair as I spent the most time trying to make it look pleasing.

Once more, thank you for your comment.

My Dearest Beauty,

I have started to conclude from the lack of attention you currently are (not) enjoying that the people who are my faithful followers in terms of watching art, are only to defined as my watchers as long as giraffes are concerned.

Or perhaps, my Dear Beauty, I am simply tired having laboured your creation for such an extensive amount of time and am better off in bed.

I conclude that the latter indeed is the case.

Yours sincerely,
Miss Josephine
