Description Another rough forest, 3 or 4 hours I believe. Still not too good with texturing and definition.

This one is great. I think this is an excellent scene. The little path through the forest and your use of sunlight through the trees add depth and mood. It's an excellent piece!
It is perfect. You are too hard a critic of your work. But we all do that.

I looked through your other forest scenes, and this one really stands out!

Beautiful! Yeah, texturing is hard when it comes to environments and grass, but the coloring and lighting effects look great!

This is my favourite among the 3 forest-y deviations you've uploaded recently!

Totally love how the light shines into the forest and how you shade your trees
I can absolutely learn from you so amazing!
Did you use custom brush to draw the leaves? or did you paint it one by one with normal brush?

another thing, I agree with ~DenzelEllis about the curvy path. Good thing that he can provide you with some way to improve it!
goodluck on your next work!

Some were custom some were hand painted.  The mixture makes it more painty

Hey Blane. Another good job. The only thing I think you could define better, is the snake like shape. It is rather unclear if it's a solid path or if it's a stream of water. I think you're going for a solid path right? Still lovely job. Keep up the great work ( I was wondering if you could give me some feedback as well on my new drawing here: denzelellis.deviantart.com/art… ? Especially with the people. Any tips on drawing them better would be most helpful )

It's a solid path.  Texturing might help I think or maybe giving it more browns?  Thanks for your help!

Heya,

I usually only add textures at the very end, when I already defined everything. Like in that painting of mine, like you said, I did overuse textures, especially in the sky, which I plain to fix and make look less dramatic, but if I we're to hide the texture layers in the rocks, you would see that I have the rocks quite defined, with the lighting, sharp forms and major cracks, but texture is just to add another level of realism. I don't recommend you use textures when you're first starting out and especially not use them as the base, because you're going to let the textures dictate you're strokes and the result of the painting. So don't use textures for a while.

First you have to decide what kind of path it is. If it's a stoney path, where stones where places to make a path. It could also be a raised path, but those are purposely man made and therefore you don't see those a lot in the forest. If it's a naturally occurring path ( In other words, a path made over time by the continues usage of the same route: if people or cars keep walking / driving over the same area, it will make it hard for vegetation to grow, because the vegetation and the soil keeps getting walked or driven over )

Since it's in a forest, I think you where going for a naturally occurring path, here is what I would do for one, is use some thin, medium to dark shadows where the transition between the vegetation and the path takes place. A path is usually made by sort of ''carving'' or ''eroding'' away of the top layer of vegetation and soil / earth, so a path would usually sit lower than the rest, so the transition would be harsher / crisper.

A path is also not so perfectly smooth and shiny, especially naturally occurring paths, because their made by just feet walking over it over and over again. If it's a rainy forest, it would be very uneven, because the water washes the soil away and causes erosion and because of the rain the soil would also be darker, so if it's a rain forest, add some more brown.

Because you're also in a forest, you would expect leaves to be falling quite often and they'd also be falling on the path. So use patches of leaves here and there on the path and define the difference between leaves and path with some darker shadows. A path ( soil ) also has rocks as soil is also made up of rocks. Add some varying sizes in rocks to the path to add some more realism.

I know it's always easier said than done, but you don't need to go overboard, it's just for here and there. Hope this helps

~DenzelEllis

When I say texturing, I don't mean overlaying anything, I mean painting on texture, as in the element of art haha.  So more rendering in other words.

I love your advice about the path, I will apply that in the future!  Thank you for your critique.

Well yeah, if you put it that way, you should add more texture
And you're welcome. Thank you for your feedback on my drawings as well!

hah i'm also working in a forest sketch right now so this gives me some ideas. i'm not an expert myself but shouldn't the tree in the middle have some darks where its behind the light source?
and if your making the stream try adding some rocks they help create movement.

denzelellis In reply to TimurHasan [2013-07-30 19:38:55 +0000 UTC]

Haha, hey there, just wanted to comment about the tree in the middle. I used to think so too, that if an object was blocking a light source, it would block any light from reaching you're eyes, but this is not the case. It's called atmospheric perspective. See light is made up of photons, which are tiny particles. The atmosphere and air are also made up of particles ( molecules ). When a light source emits lights ( photons ) these photons travel in the air, but they collide with all the molecules that make up the air. Some of the photons get absorbed by molecules, but many photons bounces off of those molecules and now move in a different direction. If you think about it, light can therefore ''bend'' around objects and cause them to be lighter if they are standing in front of a light source. Hope this will benefit you

Hahaha thank you for that.  Yep I was going for atmospheric perspective

also a dark tree in the middle would be bad composition wise.  XD
