Description Father's Day gift for my dad.

This has a funny story behind it. It was a Sunday morning, and my dad was sitting in his chair, and Alex was meowing at him, so I decided to take my camera and get some refs of my cat, since I can never have enough refs. xD

So I got close to him and snapped a few of his face, and he meowed more at my dad, then suddenly did a yawn-meow. He meowed and yawned at the same time, and I happened to get a photo of it. My whole family laughed at the photograph, and then my dad asked me to draw it for him, so I did.

He looks so crabby. Then again, he actually IS a crabby cat. And yes, he has a chipped front tooth, probably from his younger days, when he would go outside more often and patrol the neighborhood. I love my old cat.

I want to kick myself for the bad ref though. His ears were blurred in the photo, and so were his whiskers. At least I was able to draw from it, but still. Blurry refs are a huge pet peeve of mine.

Sketched with an HB mechanical pencil. Shaded with the same HB mechanical pencil, along with a 6B pencil for the darker areas.

O_O Geeez, just an HB mechanical pencil?! Ah, with the 6B for the darker...oh ok :3 *should read the entire comment before getting too excited* XD

Wooooooooow ;_; Your shading is so perfect here. I especially love where you left the highlights and everything, it really brings out the shape of the face. Bwaha, what an awesome face XD MEYAAAAAAAWWWWnnnnn... Heheheee~ I LOVE those whiskers! How did you make them stand out like that? And how do you create the highlights in that way? Especially in the mouth there and such. Do you just know where they are and leave space, or erase areas? I know you use a ref picture for your drawings and everything, but still...What I mean is, do you "plan out" which bits should be left lighter, or do you go back and do it later with an eraser? O_o lol I guess that makes no sense XD Never mind XD

I love how you did his mouth :3 That tongue looks awesome; all the texture and stuff :3 Gosh, I don't think I could colour/shade so neatly D: Is this a fairly large picture? :3
Sorry for the barrage of questions D:

Sometimes I plan out, and sometimes I just work with the sketch if I have a clear enough ref where I don't get confused. I can't remember if I mapped the highlights on this or not. It looks like I erased using a kneadable eraser. I love using those. But yeah, I do both!

I almost always map out the highlights/deep shadows on the fur, since it's a little more tricky for me than smooth surfaces.

The whiskers were done with a mechanical pencil, and sometimes when I do white whiskers, I push the lead up back inside the pencil and drag the metal part through the bristol board to make the whiskers. That way, when I color, those areas will remain white, leaving whiskers. Some people like to use white gel pen for that, but white pens seem to always skip on me.

My dad has it somewhere now, but my guess is it's like 8" x 10" ( so about 20cm x 25cm or something ). I normally draw realism at that size, and sometimes smaller.

He sometimes looks like he's crossing his eyes when he yawns, and it's SO FUNNY. He happened to have his eyes open in the ref, and I just... I couldn't keep a straight face while drawing him.

LOL. I loved working on it, that's for sure. I've never drawn a cat meowing/yawning like this before, so it was a lot of fun.

Thank you! It was hard trying to get the darks dark enough. XD

It was. The mouth especially. I couldn't really see the upper teeth that well in the photo, so I had to guess and pull up his gums and figure it out without the ref. HE WASN'T HAPPY WITH THAT LOL.

The eyes were really hard--the lighting hid the left one pretty well, and the other one was SLIGHTLY easier due to the light source hitting it, but yeah. It was a challenge.

Thank you Haze.
