Description This is yet another fan demanded redesign, selected through a journal asking you all for who you wanted to see me redesign next. To my pleasant surprise, a few of you named Flamebird as one of them. Godzilla713 , AWRowland and justinator119 all included Flamebird in their lists, so this one is for you guys.

Born in Gotham City, but raised in California, Elizabeth Kane is a passionate tennis player whose world changed forever when she discovered her cousin Kate was the vigilante known as Batwoman. Inspired by her older cousin's adventures, Elizabeth donned her own costume and took to fighting crime on the streets of Los Angeles, much to Kate's dismay. Though she's still fairly rough around the edges, Elizabeth is an exuberant young woman who lives for the thrills of being a hero. She's recently developed an occasional partnership with the Teen Titan Nightwing, but spends most of her time working for Batgirl Incorporated as one of its key operatives.

Flamebird was yet another interesting challenge. She's only really had three notable looks - her Bat-Girl ensemble and her two Flamebird costumes. Obviously I took the most inspiration from her modern Flamebird look, decking her out in fiery reds, oranges and golds. I gave her a skirted bodysuit over her tights in order to reference her status as a tennis player and accessorized the look with a utility belt, flaming cape and a mask. I eschewed the goggles in favour of keeping it simple on this one.

In reimagining her background, I wanted to link her to both Batwoman and Nightwing while still allowing her to be her own character. Part of that meant making her a west coast hero with only the faintest of ties to Gotham City. I also figure that Nightwing and Flamebird would have met in their civilian identities by going to the same college, which then led to their friendship and partnership. For those curious as to what Nightwing and Batwoman look like in my version of the DCU, you can find their accompanying redesigns by following these links -Β fav.me/d8ugn41 (Batwoman) andΒ fav.me/d8jvc7x (Nightwing). As always, I love hearing from you guys so feel free to leave a comment below letting me know what you think of this piece and of Flamebird herself.

Enjoy!

As you can tell from this piece, she's actually part of a group called Batgirl Incorporated in my fanon.

If you're a fan of the Titans West, I suggest you keep your eyes peeled. I have plans for them.

Would the plans involve references to that one issue of Hawk and Dove where a reformed Titans West (with Dial H For Hero!) beat up a bunch of dead villains (including The Top and a Clayface I'm pretty sure was #2), then Gen. J.E.B. Stuart of the Haunted Tank helps Icicle get to Heaven?

Ha-ha! Nope! But both Hawk and Dove are in the team. You can check out the roster in my most recent journal entry.

I don't really know anything about Bette Kane other than she was the first Batgirl, and sidekick to the original Batwoman, so I'm kinda walking into this blind, which is why it took me a while to comment on this. First off, this is reminding me of Ahsoka Tano even more than your Hawkgirl, since, in addition to the skirt, the outfit's mostly reddish-brown. 'Course, that's not at all a bad thing since Ahsoka's got a great outfit.Β

The costume is pretty simple, which is fine because that badass cape really says it all. Her mask is pretty cool looking too. I sorta reminds me of Damien Wayne's mask. I'm also diggin' the ponytail. It's simple, cute andΒ practical. I also like the backstory you've cooked up. With so many different characters in Gotham, basing her in LA really does help her have her own identity, with her connections to Kate and Dick still keeping her within the Bat-verse.

Thank you so much for the comment! As always, it's much appreciated.

I'm really glad you like the look I cooked up for Flamebird. It was fun to do. I'm equally as happy for the compliments towards the story itself. The impetus in moving her westward was really to create a larger scope to Batgirl Inc.'s members. We have the Gothamite Batgirl, the Hong Kong-based Black Bat and now the LA-based Flamebird. You can probably assume then that I'll be relocating Stephanie Brown as well.

I'm definitely curious to see what you do with Steph, both her story and her design.Β As I said on Barbara's piece, I really like the idea of all the Batgirls having their own team, especially with The Birds of Prey being the inspiration.

I'm not sure when I'll get around to Steph. She fell in the bottom tier of the votes, so she'll be shuffled into round two of the voting. I'll be posting shortly with a revised list for you all to choose from.

AWRowland [2015-07-03 01:00:35 +0000 UTC]

Nice design. It takes me back to the days when Bette was Spoiler, before Spoiler was Batgirl. Heck, even before Spoiler was Spoiler. I always felt her plot arc in Batwoman did tremendous damage to the character and never cared for the Hawkfire identity.

Top to bottom, I like this look. It's flamboyant and exuberant, just like Bette should be.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to AWRowland [2015-07-03 19:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm glad you like the design. You know, I wish her shortened name were Liz instead of Bette if only because so many people pronounce Bette the wrong way.

Chickfighter [2015-07-03 00:17:15 +0000 UTC]

I like the character, her modern costume and name, prior to the Hawkfire revamp. I liked her exuberance and the idea that her origin wasn't dark at all like every other Bat vigilante. Unfortunately someone decided we couldn't have that, not even one. So she got gutted and her innocence symbolically raped by the fishhook guy. Yes, Bette did get to avenge herself eventually and that was good, but sadly the youthful ability to do the impossible simply because one doesn't know it is impossible aspect of the character that I liked was no more.

Your costume is nice, but I'd probably opt for something that perhaps shows a a little leg or has a faux skirt to it. That cape you gave her certainly has some flash to it though.

I'm glad you like the cape.

Interestingly, there's not a whole lot of angst and tragedy across the board thus far in my version of the DCU. Batgirl Inc is intended to be similar in tone to the Simone era Birds of Prey.
