Description This is the 12th character profile for my Wonder Woman: The Animated Series concept.

The first of the villains!

Ares seemed like the obvious first place to start. With his backstory, I opted to stick closer to his mythological roots and really focus on the fact that he has stronger ties to the Amazons than Wonder Woman writers ever actually show. He's classically the freaking father of Queen Hippolyta, after all. How could they just ignore that? Anyway, I focused primarily on his connection to the Amazons in his profile and didn't go into too much detail about his present day involvements largely since he doesn't figure as a Big Bad aside from within the introductory episodes.

With his design, I went red and grey rather than the more familiar blues from the comics. I also retooled his helmet to give it ram horns and further referenced the ram with the Aries symbol on his cape clasp and the pelt on his shoulder.

As always, I love hearing from you all so please leave a comment below letting me know your thoughts. Also, please feel free to suggest voice actors that you feel would suit this character.

Enjoy!

Myself I noticed a repeating theme in the DCEU villains in regards to a question almost all the movies ask in their own way, 'is mankind worth saving?' and the villains represent the answer 'no'.

Zod: No because humankind is less evolved than other older, more powerful cosmic races that 'deserve' to exist more.

Luthor: No, because humankind will always be corrupted by power.

Ares: No, because humankind will always choose to give into their lust for violence.

Ares I think makes one of the clearer arguments in that because of him Diana realizes that although she can battle the evils of man she cannot defeat the power of choice. And as long as people are able to choose between good and evil, there will always be evil in the world.
Diana left the battlefield no doubt because she would have felt like Sisyphus, pushing that boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down again and repeating for all eternity. Diana chose to leave the people and stay away from them because she realized, at his will, that Ares was in a way more part of the world (War) than a monster she could stop. I think Ares might be one of the more interesting vilians because he (the God of the War) was kind of right about mankind. He left the people of earth, yet the war was still a part of people. And I think it's precisely what made Diana lose hope before Superman's sacrifice reminded her that good deeds are never paid back but that they are still worth doing.

The example of what I mean may be Professor James Moriarty's speech in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows:

"You see ... hidden inside the unconscious is an insatiable desire for conflict. So you're not fighting me ... so much as you are the human condition. All I want to do is own the bullets and the bandages. War, On an industrial scale, is inevitable. They will do it themselves, within a few years. All i have to do ... is wait. Let's not waste anymore of each other's time ... we both know how this ends. "

THE GODS IN DCEU.
I have some thoughts on the greek gods, and Gods in the DCEU.
The God does exist in DC. So I think the Titans of the old world, were the engles in

DC. And the Different Gods where the children of them, and the demigods - like Diana - are the ofsprings from them once again.

So Diana is in a way a half granddaughter of fallen angles of the old world.
They talk about this in Suicide Squad, because Enchantress and Incubus whom are over 6000 years old ( And whom are gods from maya and aztec mythology) , have actually seen this being. = The God.

Look here : www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9IXyY … 14:35
What do you think
PS: I noticed some enthusiasm at Enchantress, whom I would like to hear your opinion about, Sam:

Enchantress and Incabus were apparently gods from another world. BUT they needed human avatars to live on earth while the Greek gods were certainly made of something more physical like flesh and blood.
But Enchantress has one particular sign, I noticed: She has to say her name = Enchantress to change from June to Enchantress. It's in many ways like Billy when he's going to become Shazam. They both say their name to be able to change.

What do you think?

That's nice and all, but I think your comment is better put to use as a journal on your own page rather than in the comment section for this drawing. It's kind of tacky to use an area meant to provide artists with feedback as a soapbox for your own ideas and theories on a subject tenuously related to the concept or art in question.

Love both the design and stats on this guy! Truly worthy of the God of War. Though I'd have kept the cape black, scarier that way. Anyways, I've always found Ares as one of Diana's most interesting adversaries. While yes, he could simply be a war-mongering god who laughs as his enemies' blood flows down a mountain of their corpses like a river, he could also be a very classy and calculating villain with a unique and complex world-view and just really starts conflict moreso because it's his JOB than because it's fun. Or, at the very least his character development goes that way. I always find those interpretations more interesting as it opens up the door for some philosophical debates as well. And, on the matter of him being Hippolyta's father in myth, while it's certainly an interesting idea and DEFINITELY wouldn't mind seeing it explored in this series of yours, I have a certain....... fondness for the idea that the Amazon's are very different than their interpretation in Myths because it's been somewhere around THREE THOUSAND YEARS since they went to Themyscira. As such, their story has been told many times, with many interpretations meaning that it has been skewered and changed because of this. Would be cool having an episode where there's a conflict centering around Diana dealing with the modern-day mythological versions of the Amazons. Though, like I said, there are other equally interesting story-telling ideas with Ares as Diana's grandfather. So, whatever floats your boat.

Also, what if with your male characters's knees!?! They look like they'll snap like a twig at the sign of a decent wind.

Thanks. I'm always interested in a more layered interpretation of Ares, since I think that the mythology supports that. And yes, I'm aware of the fact that I'm a rather mediocre artist who can't draw knees properly. Shrugs.

BRILLIANT!!!

I never would have thought of making Wonder Woman a grandchild of Ares!! That is original right there! Props to you!

I also love his design! Red, black and grey are a perfect color-scheme for him! Also, the bit off fur was a nice touch!!

Question, in your series, is Ares ever represented like the New 52 Ares? Like as an image of tragedies of war rather than bloodshed?

Femmes-Fatales In reply to NRGPreview [2017-05-24 14:18:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate it.

Oh, I wouldn't call it original at all. I'm merely pulling from the Greek mythology that's existed for thousands of years. Ares sired the most famous Amazons, so why not have that reflected in the most famous adaptations of the Amazons? It always seemed odd that they never actually acknowledged the myths. As a side note, that's always what makes me cringe when people suggest Ares should be Diana's father. For that matter, that's why it's also cringe-worthy for Zeus to be Diana's father. Her great grandfather is also her father? Ick!

Ares represents all aspects of war, so this would include the tragedies.

Anytime!

Really? Huh, I didn't know that. One of my favorite classes in college was a Greek Mythology class, but i don't think they mentioned that. I wonder why? Yeah it is cringe worthy, but then again it is GREEK mythology. The class I took showed me just how... hedonistic the greeks and their gods were. So... yeah, Cringe Worthy.

OK good, so I'm guessing he can change his form to mislead others on his representations of war?

Also, for Voice Actor, I'm thinking Michael Ironside. I think his voice is deep enough to voice a violent god without going too deep and demonic.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to NRGPreview [2017-05-24 23:48:51 +0000 UTC]

I took a course in Greek mythology as well in university, but we only read a few hymns, The Iliad, The Theogany, and a few plays. Given that people can spend their entire lives studying Greek mythology, I think it's safe to say one would never learn everything from a one year course.

If you're ever curious about the individual genealogies of the Gods, their Wikipedia entries have fairly accurate lists of their consorts and the offspring produced by them. They also include same sex partners for Gods like Hermes and Apollo.

We going to pretend like modern Americans aren't as hedonistic or even more hedonistic than ancient Greeks? Haha!

All Gods possess the ability to shapeshift (which is probably something I should have mentioned in the powers section of his bio...). This power is actually really important with Ares' portrayal in the first season.

Interesting choice, by the way!

Really cool design. Elements of Injustice 1 but with red, makes him look more evil. He's really got a messed up childhood, but what can you expect when your dad can't keep it in his toga and your mom is one of the biggest b******s in Greek Mythology. Though, being Hippolyta's daddy dearest would make for some awkward family dinners. Still, would be interesting to see how Diana would react to Granpappy being the God of War. Wow, the Gods of Olympus are really dysfunctional. For voice actor, Tom Baker

Thanks! Glad you like the design!

Awkward family dinners? In what way?

Diana would be well aware of her lineage. That's not something her mother or aunts would keep secret from her given the fact that he'd have been their patron God at one point and fought alongside him in the Trojan war.

How? Let's review

Zeus: His list of affairs can put Batman to shame and Hera has full acknowledgement of it
Hera: No one more spiteful in any mythology
Ares: Literally thrives off war

If that doesn't make say hell-raising, the seating plan will

Ah, for some reason my mind framed that in context with the Amazons rather than Ares' parents. My bad.

DanFalcon [2017-05-21 04:46:10 +0000 UTC]

Now this is a badass design. Completely badass. Let's start with the fantastic colour scheme. It's  great, the red adds so much and fits unbelievably well. I also love the linework and detail on his armour too, especially the studs on his shins, the fingernails, as well as that little Aries symbol on the clasp of his cape (Now that is clever and an excellent detail). As for the backstory, it's absolutely fantastic as well, and having it stay close with its ties to the Amazons is always fantastic. While he may not be a big bad in the traditional sense, it's great to see one of Wonder Woman's most famous foes done justice. For a voice actor, I could easily see Corey Burton. Or if not Corey Burton, maybe Clancy Brown? He could be an interesting choice.

Thanks! I'm happy to hear that you like the design.

In Greek mythology, Ares already had strong ties to the Amazons. He was the father of the most famous of them. As such, how could I not reflect that? I've always felt it was astonishing how Wonder Woman writers ignore that part of the mythology. Hell, the film is the first time we're getting recognition that Menalippe was Hippolyta's sister (alongside Antiope).

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-05-25 03:58:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, hopefully in the future the writers will remember the attachment. They have such an imaginative and influential series of cultural history and storytelling as the original Greek Mythology and they almost don't take nearly enough. It would help make the world that much more immersive to blend the myth with the reality.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2017-05-25 19:33:03 +0000 UTC]

I concur. It's actually surprising that a lot of the Amazons mentioned in mythology rarely (if ever) appear in Wonder Woman's stories. Hell, I'm surprised Penthesilea is all but forgotten.
