Nice Snap! Loved the contrast and the DOF you've obtained using the branch in the foreground.

Why is it sitting in such a strange pose though?

He wasn't sitting like that, I just got lucky. He put his wing up like that for about a quarter of a second, and I just happened to bush the button at the right time.

indeed! and I just noticed you took it in Texas! I haven't been to Big Bend yet but I want to really bad! not much scenery in Fort Worth

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FideNullo In reply to WickedNox [2005-08-04 15:46:56 +0000 UTC]

Big Bend is a must, at least once or twice. Go in March, because that's when the wildflowers are blooming. If you go in July or August, I can't promise that you or any of your party will survive. And think "primitive"!

I think I've exhausted all the scenery in San Antonio. About once a year, I make a drive out West, and make a big circle from here, up to Colorado, out to Vegas, and back down through Arizona and New Mexico. Next time I want to hit some national parks in Utah. Hey, I can write it all off as a business expense... Might as well add some miles to the trip.

oh yes, well I would never go in the summer, too damn hot but I will definitly try next spring
I haven't been to Colorado but I have heard it's amazing!
have you been to California? I grew up there and OMG, some amazing places to see, driving up Pacific Coast Highway is a must, it's breathtaking! If you get a chance, take a trip from San Diego up PCH to San Fran, it's heaven!
one of my favorite places is called Big Sur, where the redwoods meet the ocean

FideNullo In reply to WickedNox [2005-08-05 02:43:30 +0000 UTC]

The Redwood National Forest is tops on my CA list of photo excursions! I have never been to California, save for two days in Burbank, but I don't count that. The PCH has long been on my list of drives. Not only am I a photo-geek, but I'm also a gear head. I love road trips, especially in small European cars that were made for twisty roads just such... I can't wait for that trip. Some day... But first I have to find another little car to fix up!

So what brought you to Texas?

WickedNox In reply to FideNullo [2005-08-05 11:51:51 +0000 UTC]

ya Burbank isn't all that scenic I also reccoment Muir Woods in San Francisco across the Golden Gate, it is an amazing place, redwoods everywhere and there is a trail that takes you to the top of the mountain to see the ocean.
there is always renting a car

as for coming to Texas, it's a long story, bascically had no choice. we became homeless for a bit and only family we had was here in Fort Worth, who said they would take us in 'till we got on our feet. It was tough but things happen for a reason, I believe. I do however miss the mountains and coastline of Cali deeply

Where in Texas are you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FideNullo In reply to WickedNox [2005-08-05 20:13:00 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about the tough times that forced you to move. It's good that it all worked out. So do you think you'll ever move back to California, or has the native Texas charm persuaded you to stay?

When my photo business is a little more financially "stable," I want to take about two weeks off just to drive through California, hitting all the best spots. I have heard tale of a place called Mammoth Lake, I believe, where there are four or five lakes up in the mountains that drain into each other, like a chain. And, that there is a certain place you can go where all of the lakes are visible at once. That is the place I want to find first!

I'm in San Antonio, myself, but I have friends everywhere. I am the road trip king. In fact, I am thinking of heading back out to Big Bend later this month to try and get some photos of the Mars event on the 27th. I also have another night exposure that I want to try with the mountains. We'll see if it pans out this time -- I've been trying to get this shot done for about ten years. Everything has to be just perfect to pull it off.

Cheers,

thank you for the kind words

I definitly don't see myself staying in Texas forever, but we shall see

road trips are so much fun, I don't get to do them enough

good luck! I look forward to seeing more of your work from trips

This is one of the better bird shots I've ever seen! *favourites* and i love birds! lol how long did you have to wait before it put out it's wing to say hi?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FideNullo In reply to srixtoja [2005-05-09 15:19:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I didn't have to wait at all for him to do his little pose. He was only on that branch for about twenty seconds total, and his wing was up like that for about a quarter-second. I totally got lucky on the capture. However, I had been stalking that little bugger for two days. He and his his mate kept flitting through the campsite, but never landing anywhere accessible. Finally he gave me a break.

Nice shot! The red & black of the bird contrasting the blue-ish/white background is making the photo kindly vivid and pleasing to the eye.

Most critiques are probably positive (which they should be) but to throw in a negative. It is difficult to capture the personality of the bird. Part of the great things about animal photos is that we can often place upon them a very human characteristic (be it: Sadness, Joy, Heroism, Tiredness and so on) whether it is conscious or unconscious to the viewer. Nothing immediately comes to mind with this photo. Maybe if you had the fortune of capturing the eyes more clearlying (and gain more of a facial expression) this aspect may have been better.

But again, good work! May you continue to capture the beauty of the world we live in but rarely pause to look at.

Congratulation's on the daily deviation. It was well deserved. I had bookmarked this photograph a while back before it recieved the daily dev and meant to come back and comment.

Anyway, I love this photograph. The muted blues and the bright red of the feather's look amazing together. Everything about this is perfect; composition, DOF. Really I have no critique to give. Excellent work!
