Description Rakshasa was one of the quick fly-by ghosts in front of the Ghost Cloud shown in the introduction to the Extreme Ghostbusters animated TV show. I was trying for a Balinese design to add some more variety to the kinds of ghost that the show could portray. I liked the design so much that I snuck it in to a few mass ghost sightings.

Eventually it got it's own show #138 "Glutton for punishment" (show #38) and was renamed Ravana and we made it look more cat-like for some reason, maybe it was in the script. I don't recall where the name Rakshasa came from, but the info on the art is written in Helen Maier's hand writing which means she also helped me ink the work that you see here.

Good job as usual. It reminds me of a shinigami.

I was thinking of a mask from Bali, so there may be a common origin.

Thanks, my inker Helen Maier was responsible for most of the linework, we shared the inking duties, I would block in the facial details that I wanted done correctly and she would complete the rest. I did very tight pencils so that she knew where to go, but her inking hand is much steadier than mine. The stresses of production sometimes made it hard to find the focus I needed.

wow all that input yet the image works because its looks so easy so simple
...maybe because all that expertise teamed with an artists eye knows exactly what to put in and what to leave out Β make that image work like its perfection!

Thank you, I think all of our previous experience doing comics helped a lot. We'd been used to working with brush and steel nibs too which also made inking easier. I wanted the XGB style to be a fairly simple, to make it easier on the entire crew to draw, including the animators.

I take it you were inspired by Rangda when you created this gentleman?

Not that deliberately, I had seen a few masks but had no idea what deities they represented. Not that I haven't enjoyed reading up on Rangda over the last few days, so thank you for that.

I remember finding it a little odd that they insisted on it being "feline" in its episode. I love how it has that Balinese mask look but still very organic and natural looking.

Yeah I don't remember why it was feline either, probably script.

Any idea if they ever plan on bringing it out for sale?

Aaah Rakshasaaaa, it rolls off your tongue, and then bites it off! One of my favorite spectres, he was a treat to ink.

Neat!Β

Well, even if I love your style, when I was young, I remember that I kept bitching that these weren't 'ghosts', more like 'demons'.
I remember that everytime I see a spectral monster being called a 'ghost'. ^^"
To me, the Ghostbusters should be more about capturing ghosts of people, but then, there would be some kind of ethic problem, I guess.
Like, for the family of the deceased that became the ghost...

There were plenty of people ghosts, but the scripts kept coming in dull, so we didn't have a lot of wiggle room. I mean ghost dragons? Ghost Leprechaun? Ghost Moby Dick? Really? The writers phoned it in more than once.

Very cool sir. Β I was always a little perplexed at Ravanna's design as in Indian mythology he's depicted as a 20 armed guy. Β Guess that answers my question. Β

The ghost got named after I'd designed him, had I researched the name properly I would have honored the original Hindu design.

revereche [2013-07-28 04:20:34 +0000 UTC]

The (boring) Dungeons and Dragons rendition of rakshasas depicts them as tiger people Maybe that's why. Originally, they're just malevolent spirits from India with various cool designs, and "ravana" is an alternate name.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

filbarlow In reply to revereche [2013-07-29 02:18:02 +0000 UTC]

Honestly I would have changed the design to reflect the Hindu source, but the name came after the design so I left it as it was. We were always running out of time so I probably had no choice.
