Description
The Security Intelligence Division is the most feared body in the rigid political apparatus of Ceres. Ruling through the military, instilling loyalty and a sense of duty through military service, would not be enough to keep the population happy if it were not flanked by brutal, yet hidden, political repression.
Officially, Ceres has no political parties, as 'the will of the people and the national idea are expressed through military service to the fatherland'.
Officially...unofficially without the SDI and the repression of dissent it would, in the long run, be impossible to maintain the integrity of Ceresian society.

The main aim of the DSI is to intercept and eradicate dissent from the social control policies of the Principality. Correction of individuals deemed dangerous and vigilance over anti-patriotic activities.
One should not imagine, however, that the DSI performs a function similar to the Gestapo of ancient Earth, or that Ceres is similar to North Korea or East Germany of the old.
Citizens are left with many economic freedoms and control over individuals is not tightened to the point of paroxysm.
In fact, DSI is usually a rare sight.
Many of the DSI's activities are carried out covertly, with targeted citizen control operations.
For example, if a university protests, the secret police will rarely be sent to investigate on the spot, but rather, cross-checks will be made in their offices to determine whether any student may be a risk and only if so, will one or more agents be sent to arrest them for questioning

This fate befalls all those who refuse to join the Young Guard or the regular army.

In the picture, a girl was taken to the police station for questioning. Torture or other brutal methods are unlikely to be used (although the DSI does not disdain the use of physical coercion). The punishment, imposed by a special internal tribunal, very likely to be enlistment in the punitive brigades.
