Description Part one of my beading through time challenge! This is Yohoia tenuis, a great appendage arthropod from the middle Cambrian, present in the Burgess Shale. The actual animal was only 23mm long, but this one is a lot bigger being almost 20cm in length.

I was tempted to go with something a bit more well known, but in the end I decided to make something more obscure. I quite enjoy having to read up about things before I make them, it means I know I have learnt something by the end, even if I don't like the result. However I am pretty pleased with this, I think arthropods lend themselves well to being made out of beads. I even managed to make it so that is can move, the segments were all made individually so it can coil into all sorts of positions. Also, as you can probably tell I discovered the dodge tool while editing this... Do let me know if it's a bit too bright, I wasn't sure when to stop XD

I had a great deal of fun with the paddles, I spent far too much time shaking it around to make them flap. The head I struggled with though, it took several attempts to get one that fit the body (I have three of them floating around my beading bag). Also, is it just me or do the great appendages seem quite similar in structure to sarcopterigian fin bones? I have probably just spent too long staring at them...

I cannot express in words  how much I love this thing. It just becomes more amazing every time I look at it! I guess I just have a weakness for wiggly segmented things, hahaha.

It's creepy, but I love it anyway, and now I want to make one just because it's jointed. Maybe I could make a segmented fish instead ...

It is great fun to fiddle with, mainly the paddles. I spent quite a lot of time when I was trying to make it just shaking it instead XD

I can imagine that. If I do make the fish, I'm sure I would be playing with it all the time. A crayfish or lobster or shrimp could be fun, too.

I find arthropods lend themselves well to being made out of beads both because their skeleton in external and because of all the neat segments.

Thanks! I think the wings came out best, the rest of it was a little disapointing but I'm proud of it none the less. That's how it goes sometimes.

Thank you! ^^ I really enjoy making them so it's nice that other people like them as well.

Thank you! I had a lot of fun making it (most of it at least, the head area was a bit of a pain) so I am glad you like it. I was a bit worried that no-one would like it because no-one would know what it was but it's nice knowing that people like it anyway.

Nah, it's something really neat so even if we have no clue it's still interesting and cool.

Aw, there he is! I've never heard of those before. I like it and I like the colours you chose. And I think it's awesome it can move

Thank you! I think few people have, I know I hadn't heard of it until I started looking to decide what I wanted to make. I am pleased you like the colours, I tend to make stuff up as I go along. I get beads whenever I see them so I have a lot I haven't used yet XD
Thanks again, I tried to make the griffin move but I succeeded with this one, so I'm happy about that.
