Description Razor-finned Muskfish
This species is named for the claw-like fins and it's strong smell, which it uses for communication in the murky waters where it lives. It's barbels are extremely sensitive to touch and are the fishes main way of finding food. The two larger ones on the sides of it's head are also covered in chemoreceptors, and can "taste" the waters around them.
Although they do reseble lobe-finned fishes, muskfish are actually placoderms.

Full bio coming later on.

The creature I was livestreaming. Basically it started out as me combining a candiru (a parasitic amazonian fish) and a giant coconut crab (rather self explanitory), then since it looked like a shrimp I stuck a Dunkleosteus head on it and added some barbels and this was the result.

As my first real attempt at using gimp I'm rather pleased with it, plus I've now got another way to do lineart, which is good. *BloodLust-Carman 's been encouraging me to develop a semi-realism style for a while and I think I just found it

I'm thinking of making some more monsters like this, since I really enjoyed that part of it. If you think that's a good idea or have any interesting creatures that I could use let me know. Or if you think I should make adoptables of this species, that would be a good thing to tell me too.

Critique would be much loved, as would any feedback.

Thank you
I'm very glad to hear that, I plateaued for a while last year so it's great to know I'm improving again. I'm trying to do things that are a little out of my comfort zone, instead of only drawing dragons or almost dragons.

Which is good. It's how I got/get better.

Yeah, it's hard to improve if you only draw the same things.

Tell me about it. xD
When I started expanding my horizons I started improving SO much faster.

Even if it doesn't work so well, when you go back it still seems like magically it's all a bit easier.

It doesn't seem like that when you're struggling with the new thing though.

CarmanMM-Dirda In reply to Fluffysminion [2012-07-31 18:08:46 +0000 UTC]

No, then it takes forever and is very...difficult. Mentally and physically. I get irritated a lot trying complicated new things.

Fluffysminion In reply to CarmanMM-Dirda [2012-07-31 18:37:54 +0000 UTC]

It can be really frustrating, especially since when you first try something new it rarely works out so then you know it's going to be worse than normal at the early stages of the drawing, so it's hard to keep going with it, and it's hard to start again too, so then you're kind of stuck in an irritating position, because you know you have to do it to improve.

Or even if you do good it takes ages and is annoying.

True, the extra effort you have to put in makes it take longer and makes it annoying, but at least you get something out of it. It's all worth it in the end

Very cool! The way you did the ink lines kind of reminds me of old woodcarvings of whales and "sea monsters" from the 17 and 1800's. And those teeth loo particularly wicked... Neat piece. ^_^ (Also, the Candiru is terrifying. O_o)

Thank you! That's not something I planned, but it's quite a good thing for it to resemble, given the subject.
Yeah, those sort of teeth are pretty cool, they're so different to the sort you normally see.

WHEEEE DIFFERENT LINEART!
it somehow looks a little less squishy XD very very cool fluffy! Even wish such drastically different lines, your style still shines through, and this creature is pretty damn epic! Like seriously.

I know! It's been ages since I changed my lineart style.
Yeah, I've worked out where the squishyness comes from, because of this drawing. Thank you I'm glad you like it. I think I'm going to try to draw more new creatures from now on, instead of just dragons.

Oh my god, this lineart.
I just love how you defined all these muscles and wrinkles in it. <3

Super pretty species! I would hate getting bitten by it though, hahah.
And I just love the murky water you fitted it into.

Fluffysminion In reply to Wyrmin [2012-07-25 16:35:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I really tried to fit as much detail as I could onto it, since I love that sort of thing when others do it but I've never attempted it before myself. I'm glad it works.

Thank you! It was fun to design, and I'm very pleased it turned out well. Although I'd agree with you about the bite though, those teeth do look pretty nasty.
I wasn't really that sure what I was doing with that, but it's good that it works anyway XD
