Description My first full illustration of this place, a concept for my comic, found on this page.  It'll likely improve in details and complexity as I continue to improve my skills.

Guys, this was super duper fun to draw. Since I currently don't have any experience with 3D modelling programs, I drew the city the old fashioned way (digitally), with lines. I even figured out how to divide space into even thirds. I didn't really employ the technique all that much after all, but I'm happy to have learned more about three point perspective.

Stay tuned for another update tomorrow!

Also! I now have the comic on another, separate website.

Man, I want to learn sketch up so badly. I haven't taken the time to learn it yet, but thank you!

Oh, I totally get what you're saying. When I give this one another attempt, I'll definitely try adding more directions to give it a sense of a 'real' fictional city.

Thank you for your feedback!

I would recomend Blender with toon shader
Had tried to learn ScetchUp with no success. I think blender is easier and more versatile (transitioned from 3Ds Max 8).

Oh, thank you for your suggestions! I don't have much experience with any 3D modelling software.

I'm a huge fan of Escher, so I was directly drawn to this bizarre and complex scenery! It looks absolutely amazing!

Project Comment:

This piece practically leapt off the screen at me when I first saw it.  Escher obviously comes to mind, but also the final scenes of Labyrinth.  It's not merely the subject matter than impressed me, though; it's the execution.  Your use of various light shades of flat gray give dimension, and the gradient grays in the windows add energy.  This piece not only changes horizons but scales as well, and some details defy logical perspective.  This is an outstanding practice for three-point perspective and an intriguing finished piece.

Unfortunately, that intrigue doesn't last very long.  As a practice piece, it's great.  But there's no focus, no story being told.  I see the skill with which it was executed and begin searching for the easter egg that will reveal what the artist is wanting to say.  But I don't find anything.  There's nothing alive in the picture: no people, no animals, no plants...not even a sun or clouds in a sky.  I can see the absence of sun and clouds as intentional since you don't want to define any horizons.  But I'd have loved to see something happening.  Even Escher's work sometimes used animals or even waterfalls to show activity.  The piece is solid, accurate, and dormant.  Visual arts are not so different from written ones: pictures, paintings, sculptures, etc. should (I think) tell a story, be it ever so short.  The nice thing about visual arts is that you can jump to the climax.  Anyway, those are my two bits' worth.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! Yeah, it was mostly a practice, experimental piece which I may add more to in future attempts. I appreciate your feedback!

Woohaaaa this is crazy!
really good job! i'd love to see it full colored! see how you practice light over different materials and textures.... i see lots of potential here, considering i was to ask you what 3D programm did you use hahaha (btw there's this Google Sketchup that is really easy to learn and you can get really nice 3D mockups to use i your comics, maybe just use it as a basic structure, like a help to your perspective work...this may save you lots of time!).
Really ther's not much to say haha this drawing makes me dizzy and that's cool

Hi, I'm from
You have an amazing understanding of perspective! As far as I can tell, almost everything makes sense structurally. The composition is dynamic and complicated without being overbearing, making me feel as if I'm lost within its maze.
The one part where I don't get how the perspective works is the black door and window near the center. Since they're on the same plane, I would expect their lines to be parallel to each other. I get that you meant to distort them more in comparison to the rest of the piece, but something about them doesn't make sense in terms of perspective.
I think you could also improve the piece by shading in some of the white areas. There's a lot of white surfaces, especially in the top half of the piece, making some objects appear flat at first glance.

fluoroid In reply to firthyn [2016-07-05 22:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I thought about that difference too. I'll play around with it and see how I might change it. Thanks so much for the feedback!

CanelaRose In reply to fluoroid [2016-07-05 23:24:38 +0000 UTC]

I think if I really focused, like with everything, I could get somewhere. It art class my problem is that it dealt with rulers… which equated to numbers and math in my brain, so I had a real opposition to it XD (math is a sore subject for me haha).

Anyway, again, this is super impressive, Ren!!

Hey, I saw your artwork on !

First thing that came to mind: Escher. You captured the same crazy perspectives in the artwork and it almost creates a vertigo feeling for the viewer.
Furthermore, you are a master of staircases. Perspective on those darn things are ridiculously difficult, certainly when one adds more than a dozen of them in a drawing.
A minor point of feedback is the primairy background. It feels like it is missing some detail or perhaps different colour or value? But I would understand if you left it bare on purpose.
Great work, amazing perspectives!

evehartman In reply to evehartman [2016-07-05 09:48:35 +0000 UTC]

To elaborate more on my feedback about the background; My suggestion for adding details to the background would be some of those wicked staircases, in a light value, behind the main buildings in the foreground. I think it would have created even more depth to the drawing.

I can do it but it drains me...
This took me a whole day and it's not that detailed and only a 1 point perspective. lol

Practice practice. (= I knew I saw (at least) something of yours that had a background. And that page is nice.

But we all have different things we work on at different stages of improvement. If you ever have the inkling to try again, I'd love to see it. ^^
