Description Close up of a turn signal unit on a 1938 Chevrolet. It's a great example of 1930's industrial design, both functional and beautiful.

Haha, that's a turn signal?
That's so cool.
I want one on my car.

Yup. It was an option back then. Turn signals weren't required until the late 1940's or early 1950's. There should be reproduction ones available somewhere.

That's awesome.
It's hard to believe they weren't required, and yet, I do...
Just today I was pulling out of school and someone went right in front of me without looking, and then they didn't use a signal before turning at a stop sign, haha.

Seatbelts weren't required until 1965 and that was only for front seat passengers. Rear seatbelts were required from 1966 on. Shoulder harnesses weren't required until January, 1968. It was the efforts of activists and customer demand that has led to safer cars.

It's a good thing nothing is up to just one single person in this world.

I love that style. It's a shame that no one makes things like that anymore. It's pretty neat how they made every little detail a work of art.

It was the heyday of the age of streamlining pioneered by Raymond Loewy.

Beautiful! I prefer the styles of the 1939-40 Packard One-Eightys. truly the last of the uber-luxurious coachbuilt american automobiles!

The signal is mounted on a very nice 1938 Chevy I've seen at shows. It's the same car I have in my gallery.

Why can't we have cool things like that on vehicles now?

focallength In reply to khinson [2008-09-19 00:53:52 +0000 UTC]

Mainly because they were an add on rather than built into the car. Plus it wouldn't pass muster under modern safety regulations for pedestrian protection.

Truthfully, I imagine getting hit by a car with something like that on it, would definitely leave a permanent mark!

They also were optional equipment back then. They weren't required until after WW 2.

I certainly didn't know that. I think some people where I live still think they are optional as they don't use them!

Exterior mirrors weren't required until 1966. Until then, they were considered optional equipment. Amber front indicators were required from the 1963 model year on. People don't use their indicators around me, either.
