Moderator #328 reviewing entrants 18420 and 18090 day one footage of Rite of Fortitude journey. Days passed - 1. Miles traveled - 75.  Handler: Footy Bandit

Ahead of schedule for arrival at end point. Mauja assigned to assist in journey as pack tokota. Beginning of journey much like others- Tokotas energy levels high, both 18420 and 18090 are in prime health. No fat, muscled correctly, gleaming coats.  Male is larger than female- going to be used as mount of handler, while smaller female will serve as pack. 2nd time for handler to help guide tokotas to end point, still rather unsure so requested assistance of Mauja.

6:45 am: Set off from starting point (Tokotna research center) at a brisk pace. Drones are working and functional. Two cameras trained on 18420 and 18090. The mountainous region is easier and for beginning part of journey as tokotas travelled downhill for most of the day. This plus the drive of both tokotas and handler had them traveling at about 5mph. This was a rather quick walking pace- at times we noticed both 18420 and 18090 taking the familiar iron-like wolf trot. Group made it down the mountain quickly and began following the west river.  Soon after, handler made the decision to let Tokotas loose to hunt for food while handler ate own provisions. 18420 was found scavaging a partially eaten deer carcass, while 18090 ate her fill in fish. Handler did not let tokotas gorge themselves and after about 10 minutes resumed travel. Pace was slightly sluggish after eating, but picked up again as group picked their way through the dense forest. Because of foliage, drone footage is sparse and restricted. Few key points of interest:

- Suspension bridge in middle of forest: All three tokotas wary of crossing so high. All three showed bravery and trust in handler and made it over bridge. Slight pause in middle as 18420 had to be coaxed across. All in all, good crossing.

- 18090 became distracted at one point as a small herd of elk took a drink in the river. The urge to hunt was strong, but was quickly reprimanded and came back to handler submissively.  Listens well.

Group reached Lake Aok Imiq at around 11:12 pm. Group in excellent condition. Well fed, (hunting was done at dusk) and quickly fell asleep due to exciting first day. Handler also in good condition. No assistance needed.

Note: Interesting scene in Lake Aok Imiq: 18420 and 18090 found an old Tokota skull near the lake’s beach. Both smelled the scent for a moment and then sat next to each other and pointed their nosed to the moonless sky and howled. Mauja howled in return and soon could make out howling of wild? tokotas in distance. Sign of reverence to those deceased perhaps?  Very melancholy sounding.

7:30 am: Group got off on a late start due to slight malfunction with packing gear. Sinch broke on 18420’s saddle, and had to be repaired. Group decided to make up for lost time by cantering through the rest of Lake area. Slowed down as entry to forest began again. As forest thinned throughout the morning, much more was seen in tokota behavior and endurance. Both tokotas are fine specimens. Each listen well and work together as a team. The morning’s hunt was an example of this. 18420 chased a fox right into 18090’s awaiting jaws. Both ate pleasantly together- no bad temperament or dominance displayed. Although the two wandered far from where Handler ate to find sustenance, both made their way easily back to Handler without incident. Crossing the plains near Kesuk Bay went quickly and the tokotas made quick work of the mileage. Definitely on track. Handler put trust in both by napping in the middle of the day. Tokotas did well on their own and group reached the eastern most side of Kesuk Bay by 10:23 despite late start. Group in excellent condition. Well fed, (hunting was again done at dusk). Nothing of note or interest in day 2.

6:37 am: Group set off in timely manner. No problems in morning. Tokotas beginning to show slight signs of weariness as day goes on. Endurance mode is starting to kick in. The gain in elevation to cross The Superiors also seems to put a slight strain on animals, and makes them focus more. Not as much frolicking and easy gait as other days. 18420 became a bit snappish at 18090 when climbing a more treacherous route up the mountain mid-day. Because of ropes keeping group together, 18420 climbed a little too quickly and was almost pulled back Handler and all when 18090 couldn’t keep up. He began to retaliate with a snip at the female’s shoulder but was quickly corrected by Handler and group made it up the cliff safely. Because of the nip, there seemed to grow a slightly cold and offended silence between the two tokotas until 18420 had an incident. In evening hunt, 18420 ran into a porcupine and got 7 needles lodged in snout. Luckily happened at the top of the mountains only a few miles from planned camping spot. Group stopped there and Handler tended to tokota. 18090 showed sympathy as the needles were pulled out and licked partners wounds after medical attention. Both slept soundly together in a small huddle as the night was colder than usual. Suspect storm on day 4. Tokotas in good condition at end of day. Well fed. Slight exhaustion, but that is to be expected.

6:00 am: Group begins very early for longest stretch of journey. Handler decides to mount 18090 for remainder of journey because of 18420’s snout. Does not want to inflame it more by the tugging of halter. Decides also to keep 18420 halter-less and only tie Mauja to 18090.  18420 is slightly subdued because of small injury and follows easily along. Journey to Akycha’s gate is long and endurance mode is definitely set in the tokotas. Hunting is quick and without any tom-foolery in the morning. Tokotas stay focused and ready to finish travel. Storm begins about 10:35 in morning and makes tokotas work for the mileage. Handler pushes them to the limit, but tokotas are willing. The dense forest helps keep the group from getting too soaked, but by end of day tokotas are exhausted. Team takes a while for evening hunt and lingers next to handler’s fire for quite some time. Camp is set up in Akycha’s Gate.  The large cave is a welcome abode for the tired tokotas. Group in fair condition. Well fed. A feeling of wanting the trip to be done can be seen throughout the group.

8:00 am: Group gets a late start to Handler’s urging. Good decision. The tokotas seemed to need the extra rest. Luckily group does not have to travel as far on last day, and the route is mostly downhill for the rest of the journey. Skies have cleared and the day is a perfect weather day. 18420 is in a much better mood. Nose is healing perfectly. Group sets off at a good pace. Warm weather seems to have put all Tokotas in good spirits. There’s a bit of wrestling and horsing around at beginning of day.  In late afternoon as the group finally exited the mountains, Handler let the animals stretch their legs and they went for a good long run. Distance was covered quickly and the animals seemed to want to really go quickly. Team reached Coastal Pilitak around 9:00 pm. Animals have been fed, watered, and stabled, ready for a nice long rest.
