Description Rite of Merit Hunting Story

Summer in the north blossomed with green fields, wild flowers and creatures of every size scurrying to eat, play and be merry. Leaves burst out in full to gather as much of the golden life giving rays as they could, while the usually frozen waters swirled and gurgled with life and gayity. The wildlife in the taiga was bountiful, and each summer it was the same. Herbivores gorged themselves on the blooming flora, each mouthful adding to their own thick bellies. Prey multiplied, and because of this- so did the carnivores.

Three such toothed and hungry creatures were out on a late august day, and the usual heat that made those with thick fur run to the cooling grip of water or shade was tampered by the thick white clouds that were gathering above. It was not a usual summer day. Grey was the color, and the once abundant life- chittering and playing in the sun - was quiet and still.  Perhaps it was something in the air, or the tiniest of chills in the wind, but the shadow of Autumn seemed to be oozing it’s way onto the northern land.  One thing was for sure as large male wolf-bear Tokota lifted his long and slender snout into the breeze - a storm was coming.

The male’s deep blue eyes reflected his coat as he gazed into the sky. High above, unheard by Tokota or prey alike, a drone hovered, it’s recording eye focused on the three wolf-bears below it. The higher winds rocked it gently, but it kept it’s focus on the pack. The three animals were all large and in their prime; A white male - known as Mauja kept to the back of the three, and two lilac Toks an accented female named Blackmore’s Night and a laced piebald male known as Sinaaq led the way.  The two latter had a task this afternoon and Mauja was there to keep an eye on the youngsters. The three moved silently forward as the drone followed silently, keeping track of Blackmore’s and Sinaaq’s Rite of Merit.

The underbrush was thick and forrested as Sinaaq led the way. His blue eyes roamed silently in front, looking for any sort of movement. He was large and muscular, and as this was a test of his skill, the mature Tokota knew he would have to rely on his bulk to help with the hunt. Trained well by his master, the canid snuffed and tasted the air for the triplet’s quarry. A little way off, his partner in crime Blackmore moved just as stealthily. Her body was more lithe and free of most of the tangling fur that seemed to snag against any brush, and her silence was a useful tool.  Her blue coat shimmered in the uncommon sun light that pierced the brances of the pines they walked through, her lilac nose to the ground to catch any scent of the assigned Canadian Geese that they were told to kill and bring back to their masters.

All seemed silent in the forest as the three followed a quiet stream that ran throughout the trees. Earlier they had spotted a triangle of the flying birds gracefully soaring and honking along the very water line they now travelled upon. It was up to their tracking skills and sneakery now that would lead them to where the flock had landed to rest. Sinaaq took the east bank while Blackmore resided on the right, and the two systematically tiptoed along the riverbed, looking for nesting signs or feathers that might have dropped from the flapping birds.

The hike seemed to go on for quite a while- the geese easily able to fly much farther than one could by walking. A few squirrells here and there chittered angrilly as they saw the pack- letting others in the area know there was mischeif afoot- but the three ignored them.  They had learned in their youth that chasing a quick squirrell was hours of work for only a mouthful of meat. Annoying though they were, and both Sinaaq and Blackmore would have loved nothing more than to silence them for eternity, the two continued to hunt- quickly moving out of sight of the obnoxious vermin to keep any other prey unsure of where the pack was.

It was late afternoon when Blackmore suddenly stopped, her black tipped ears alert and her nose twitching with a surge of excitment and adrenaline. Sinaaq mirrored her moves as he caught sight of her stance and listened with unadulterated intent. Silence seemed to whisper in their pointed ears when suddenly a soft hnnk...hnnk... ran through their ear drums. The obvious sound of splashing and honking geese. Almost as if someone had hit a button, the two sank low simultaneously to the ground, their fur on their bellies the only things touching the dead leaves. Sinaaq looked briefly at Blackmore, and though there was no nod or physical sign of acknowledgement, the two began to move off in different directions as if it was part of their plan. The inhuman and instinctual knowledge of the wild was upon the two, and it was a ritual that mankind still is in awe at to this day.

As the two slunk forward, the trees began to clear and a small hidden pond appeared in view. The water was rippling softly, reflecting the grey dark sky while the geese played and splashed, resting their tired wings from a long flight. Cattails and pond scum were scattered generously around the edges of the water feature, both a hinderance and a help for the Tokotas. The cattails were wonderful for hiding behind... but they also hid from view the birds as well. Again, the instinctual knowledge of the hunt coursed through the Tokota’s veins as Blackmore walked to one end of the pond, close to the flock, while Sinaaq moved to the other and farther area. It seemed almost as if the pied male was a bit confused at where the honking birds were, but with determination the furry hound moved to a low gathering of cattails and stayed motionless, watching intently at the other side of the water.

The unsuspecting birds continued their play, the coolness of the oncoming storm a delight to them. All was fine and happy until a soft crrk stopped them all dead in their tracks. Like turning off a light, the geese immediately ceased their noise, their long necks holding their heads high and alert. Instinctively they began to gather together, knowing that if danger was afoot, being in a group was better than being alone. The silence in the air was almost tangible as deaths fingers began to reach for his fine feathered friends.

With an explosion of speed, Blackmore burst from her hiding place, her white fangs bared as she charged through the water.  The surprise of the attack was obvious on the bird’s faces as for a moment they flapped awkwardly and unsure of where to go. It was in the split second of confusion that the blue female leapt onto the flock and in a swift snap and clack, one of the geese’s necks fell victim to her hungry jaws. The others quickly organized themselves and they ran- christ-like on the water, their wings flapping to get them airborn and away from the murderous Tokota.  It seemed as if their would be one casualty that day as their beaks almost smiled with relief while their feathers began to lift them off the ground. They knew in the air they were safe.

But they were not high enough in the air.

Springing like a wound up steel trap, the tightened muscles of Sinaaq released and the wolf-bear launched himself from his hiding place across the pond, into the air and the oncoming flock. A honk of alarm was briefly heard before it was silenced in the loud clip of the male tokota’s jaws snapping tight. Quickly twisting in mid air like a trained acrobat, the tricky Tokota turned earthward like a cat and landed with a loud splash on all fours. A quick shake of his head made sure the meat in his jaws was soundly dead before he lifted his head to his pack-mate.  A panting smile greeted his full mouth as Blackmore waved her stick of tail at him in excitement and happiness. They had done what they were sent to do.  It was time to go back home with their prizes and hopefully get a taste of some of the goods.
