Hello! Came by today to leave a short critique here for Critmas 2018. I'm not a photographer, but love to look at photos.
I saw your photo of the same building, in the same condition, in the first photo I saw. Though both are great photos, I particularly like this one for the framing of the subject, and the closer view. The fireman standing there really 'pops' with color, and his long shadow both speaks of the cold, blue on the ice, and provides a sight-line for viewers. His shadow leads us directly into the heart of the photo. So does that ice-covered stairway outside the building on the other side. It's just incredible. And the dark opening toward the middle completes a sort of circular path for the eye to follow. You caught many shadows here, and they help show the icicles everywhere. Also, looking at those benches toward the middle, and the stairs, make this even more of an other-worldly scene. Nobody can find a seat near this building after the fire - icicles defeat any purpose that benches or stairs may have had, just as surely as fire would do. The darker shades here and there on the building add fine depth to the shot, and again I must say, your framing of the subject is perfect. I can't think of one thing wrong with this, except the loss of the building and the conditions the firefighters had to endure. As a photo, this is excellent and I'm very glad I saw it.
And I wish you a Happy New Year in 2019!

Oh my god! I didn't think that someone would actually post a picture from a fire that took place in my old hometown of Plattsmouth, let alone post it on DA.
I remember this. It was an electrical fire that started in the basement of that bar, as a result both the bar and the Chiropractor next door were extensively damaged and the Jewelry Store next door to the Chiropractor was damaged from smoke and water. That was the very first bar that I ever went to after I turned 21. My buddies and I played pool and that was my very first time I'd ever tried Jagermeister coconut rum.
It was ashamed that the place ended up burning down less than a year and a half later. Yeah that place was most definitely NOT a pub, aside from bags of chips and dill pickles that they served, they did not sell or cook any food, that was most definitely a bar.
I thought that the "Quart House" was a creative name for a bar especially considering its geographical location directly across the street from the Plattsmouth Courthouse. I remember that part of the street was closed off for several months before they finally cleared out the rubble and what was left of the brick facade. I know that the street corner later on got into a common area for the city and that they'd set up a stage every summer so that live bands could come out and do a live performance every Saturday.

What a pity about the historic structure. But what a fantastic photo. Specifically the yellow against all the white/grey.

A very impressive photo! The overall effect is fascinating to look at, but it's a shame to hear about the fire.

Viewing this reminds me of a similar incident that happened in my home town. A fire in the dead of winter, spread from a small apartment above an older store front on our main street. Firefighters battled it all though the night to contain the flames as it spread from one building to the next--buildings that were all connected.
I remember teams of firefighters taking breaks and trading out to warm up by a fire and thaw themselves out, because the water had misted back on them, their uniforms frozen into solid armors of ice. Others just fought on, because what was point when that melted ice would freeze on them again?
We'd lost half a block of historical storefronts that night. It's hard to remember what any of it used to look like, as now it's all an open lot, used and rented for city events. Revitalization projects have popped up since to fix up and revive the original look of the remaining buildings surrounding that area.
It's interesting to have seen this picture and remembered that part of my town. How different it looks now compared to then. All of those Giant icy spires fixating history and memory in time before it all crumbled to pieces. I wish I had gotten pictures. Especially of the fresh snowfall from the day before, littered with Ashe that had carried across the town. It was both pretty and tragic.
