Witness the power of nature...

[Purchase Prints Here ]

Canon Digital Rebel XSi
Tamron 10-24mm

I know it seems silly to have "anniversaries" for chases, but this storm had a strong impact on my career. It was the first legitimate supercell I ever saw, and is still one of the best I've shot. The surreal experience standing in front of this behemoth in the plains of eastern Colorado with friends is what got me hooked on chasing the weather.

This is the third and hopefully final processing of this image. Back in 2010, I knew little about photography (relatively speaking) and even less about post-processing. Failed to shoot in RAW, used the wrong white balance, under-exposed the image, and even worse, only processed a low-res 1000px version of my photos. This time, that is not the case. This time I processed this right, a throwback to my older, more simplistic way of post-processing, but with new techniques and in higher resolution. A proper tribute to the first time I truly saw nature's forces at work.

All in all a really cool shot, but what really stands out to me is that little dot of a sun in the corner completely dominated by the blues of the storm!

Well done!

It's been a learning experience hasn't it? It is for every shooter. I do think you've come along faster than most and it's been a pleasure to watch your progress. You've even taught me a few things about chasing storms--not that I knew a lot before so don't get too swelled a head on that compliment!

This storm was one of the most picturesque that you have captured I think and you've got a right to be very proud of the images you got of it. I'm all about the lightning and this one had plenty of it! I don't know but I would hope you've got some nice big prints made of this and hanging on your wall Never lose or delete these files either!

Take care out there--no storm is worth getting hurt over. Congrats again on these images and happy anniversary on it!

Haha glad I can educate at least to some extent I'd make a post about chasing tips if I was more experienced. I've got a lot to learn about forecasting yet, but can at least analyze a storm and its features in person now. Used to be scared not knowing what was going on with a storm, now it's really fun to look at a cloud and figure out what it's doing I do have a big 20x30" print (unframed) of this storm, but not this particular shot... which I really want now Gotta save those precious image files and keep them safe like bricks of gold
