Description Unnamed creature thingy. I wanted to design something different from my norm. I also needed a creature that had similar anatomy elements to a human frame, so that I could render it easier for a 3D program and I had the idea for "feet and hands" that looked like humanesque hands and feet. I've also wanted to use the plate-like teeth idea from an ancient fish on a creature....but as always, there still had to be sharp pointy fangs.

He is unnamed for the moment. I'll come up with a name for him eventually.

What do you guys think of the color? I don't want to make them too flashy since they are predators, but I want to convey a sense of "danger" in the markings. I thought that the bright orange was a good all-around indicator of a dangerous critter.

depending on it's methods hunting, I would make them contrast with the environment if it's a stealthy hunter, however this guy looks fast, and hes apparently poisonous so I would recommend that you have them hunt in packs and the prey should be slightly larger and very fast as well, the beast could single out one and chase it away from their herd while simultaneously injecting toxins into their prey until they fall, considering that they are chasing a poisoned victim, the poison would spread faster. Just an idea...

Down to paw prints even! Wow. The only thing I can think to add is that this reminds me of Allison Theus' works... Beast of Oblivion. Not to suggest that you've copied, but to say that your clean lines and anatomical design is that pointedly done and realistic. Very nice job.

*sigh* No, no it doesn't... And such a comment is not flattering.

As I have stated in comments before this one, comparing a creature concept to an overly popularized film(like Avatar) is not flattery, it is actually degrading. Unless the creature was meant to exist in the same world, or was fan art of the film, making the comparison is not appreciated by artists. Avatar was not that original, similar concepts have been created and will be created in the future, and half of the things that made up Avatar exist almost the same here on Earth.

I am glad you like this piece enough to not only fav it, but also enough to leave a comment. But the comment you have made is not one that makes me feel proud, in fact getting comments like these make me want to take this down.

Perhaps you haven't run into this issue yet, but I hope you can understand where I am coming from.

You're not being a douche, that is an honest question. It was colored in Photoshop, the lines were done with ink on paper. I scanned the lines into Photoshop and added the color there.

Now THAT is one badass mofo. Forgive me for saying this, but it reminds me of the thanator from Avatar. Very nice.

Anyway. I think the colors are awesome, and I love the blue. However, and keep in mind this is just my personal opinion and orange gets the point across just fine, but I never really liked the color orange. I'd go with yellow.

Freha In reply to NovaLuna [2010-02-08 05:31:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your opinion... But I must say that although I love the Avatar world and movie, having something I have created compared to it degrades the sense of creativity behind my work. I don't want you to feel like I'm jumping down your throat about this, I'm just letting you know how it feels for the artist when you compare something to a popularized creation like Avatar. Even if there are similarities, which is bound to happen because the creatures in Avatar are still based on earth animal anatomy, please don't say to the artist "looks like such and such." I know you meant it more as a compliment than anything else, but as an artist, the comment makes me feel like I'm less creative. Just something to keep in mind.

I thank you for taking the time to leave a comment instead of just a 2 second fav.

Sorry, it wasn't my intention. I get comments like that all the time, but as more of a fanartist than original, the thought didn't even cross my mind that someone might not want to hear them.

You're welcome, though.

Looks great! Love the colour blending from the underside, it looks very natural! Someone else already mentioned something along these lines, but predator colouring is usually based on environmental camouflage, though if you can come up with an setting with those colours, than the stripe could make "scientific sense". Otherwise you can just say "it looks cool, damn it!" Which would be good enough for me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Freha In reply to Treyos [2010-02-08 05:43:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

He is definitely a night hunter, so I wanted his coloration to be dark. I am torn about the environment though. I can't decide if I want him to live in a jungle, or a badland/desert. I normally make critters that live in forests/plentiful environments, so it would be nice to have a desert critter. Since he is only about the size of a pony/large Great Dane he could hide in small caves or even tunnels during the day and hunt at night.

I'm not really looking to make a big story around him, I made him for my portfolio and to render in 3D, not for a storybook.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Treyos In reply to Freha [2010-02-08 13:00:16 +0000 UTC]

A badlands environment could work well. If there were perhaps an orange colour to rock striations in the area, the stripe could even help it blend into the scenery at night.

"Hey, wasn't that rock further away a minute a go?"

And, yeah, I'm a writer... I can't help myself.

In addition to =meihua 's comment, I believe that bright colors (in nature) are only displayed on venomous/poisonous/gross-tasting creatures that are heavily predated, and/or creatures that are in an ecosystem with larger predators above them in the foodchain.

However, I love the anatomy. The plated teeth are a gorgeous addition - talk about taking a NASTY chunk of flesh out with every bite!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Freha In reply to inkbone [2010-02-06 05:49:19 +0000 UTC]

I pointed out to Meihua that they are venomous... The end of the tail has a retractable spine. Venom is excreted when the spine is out, that is what the green stuff is. So I guess the bright colors do make sense.

I am such a geek when it comes to anatomy. lol I love teh muscles!! And I envisioned that plate-like teeth would do nastier amounts of damage than fangs. Even if these buggers don't kill you, they'll take a pound of your flesh!!

inkbone In reply to Freha [2010-02-06 12:57:26 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I didn't even notice that! Nice little bit of detail that you stuck in there. x)

As far as muscles go, I can imagine this little beastie pouncing on something, and doing the damage akin to the jaws of life, lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Freha In reply to inkbone [2010-02-08 06:09:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the details are hard to see in this little poor quality version. The face details are lost too. There is a series of sensory pits on his face where the orange is broken up between his eye and nose. In this small version it just looks like snarl wrinkles.

meihua [2010-02-06 05:23:12 +0000 UTC]

Look at that wonderful musculature! I don't know about the markings - they look great, but in Earth-nature colorful markings usually indicate that they're poisonous or otherwise gross-tasting when ingested (e.g. poison dart frogs, monarch butterflies) or venomous (e.g. coral snakes, blue ringed octopuses), not that they're dangerous predators. Dangerous predators have a habit of fitting in with surroundings really well. The only exceptions I can think of are animals that hunt bugs, like hummingbirds and red-breasted robins. Probably doesn't conjure up fearsome imagery
So in summary, the bright markings aren't good unless he's venomous or gross-tasting, or unless he lives in another world where plants or sand are blue/orange.

Freha In reply to meihua [2010-02-06 05:42:05 +0000 UTC]

On his tail is a spine that is used to strike prey. The spine is retracted into the fleshy pouch/cover on the end of the tail unless striking, but I have it exposed and oozing in the picture. The green stuff oozing off of it is a deadly venom. So yes, they are venomous. I was also thinking that if they have a venomous tail, it might be nice to have venomous saliva, like a Komodo dragon does.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meihua In reply to Freha [2010-02-06 06:00:01 +0000 UTC]

Cool, like a scorpion! Does he also glow under UV like a scorpion?
Komodo dragons don't actually have venomous saliva, they just have really dirty mouths so a lot of nasty bacteria grow there and infect whatever happens to survive their bite.
