Description This was my final project for my independent study class. I did a skeletal study, muscular study, and a full body study of a creature I created. After fiddling around with several creatures I settling on this spiny little guy. I spent a ton of time pouring over anatomical drawings of dogs and felines. I used what I learned to flesh out the Quill-Dog and have made skeletal and muscular studies as accurate as possible.

Enjoy

I would prefer that you don't draw the skeletal study. I have a "free for use" folder if you want drawings to practice coloring or redraw the image (please follow use rules). But if you really want to learn how to draw something like the skeletal study, then do what I did. This is my secret process that I go about when I want to draw out a "new" animal anatomy:

This skeleton is based mostly on a dog's, so I'll focus on the dog referencing.

Go out and find as much material on dog skeletons/anatomy; photos of skeletons, anatomy drawings of skeletons (which my skeleton study is not, I have modified the anatomy), pictures of the dogs themselves and even a few anatomy images of dog muscle structure. Then take what you have learned about the skeleton and apply it to the image of the dog, draw on the image(a paper copy so you don't damage any books or photos) where the bones would be positioned in the animal. Getting to know the muscle structure helps a lot as well. After some more studying and anatomical practice you will have the knowledge to draw a dog in any position you want. As long as you have figured out how skeleton and body shape relate then you can draw whatever animal you have studied in whatever pose and abstract form that you desire. This process is long and frustrating, but perseverance and practice pay off in the long run. Just because you are not very good now doesn't mean anything, there was a time in every fantastic artist's life when they weren't "that great".

It is always vindication when you convince a professor that something they don't care much about can actually be used for something impressive. This puts me in a bit of mind of Allison Theus' work (Beast of Oblivion)... the things she calls "Flays". I realize the study of muscular/skeletal study is as old as the hills, but there aren't so many folks who do that in fantasy creatura.

Anyway, this is a nice trio; a well done artistic project. You chose well I think.

great studies, i just wish you would have used the same position for all three drawings. would have been a bit more comprehensible in the translation that way.

I purposely made each of the drawings different so that, although they were all studies of the same animal, they could all stand on their own as a individual piece of work.

fascinating study! brings to mind the swiss family robinson.. they killed a porcupine and used its skin to make armor for one of their dogs... freaked the other dogs out... haha

I think all three studies turned out beautifully
If you didn't get a super A+ for this then your teacher is crazy! lol

Thank you! My professor liked them and gave me an A on the project. I was so happy, especially since my professor feels that fantasy art is sort of juvenile.
