"Stunky blew away the deep fog with Defog!"

This is an illustration for Game-Art-HQ 's Pokémon Generation IV tribute! They've still yet to finalize the gallery for Generation III, but being a part of it as well as their first two were great fun. There's no way I'd skip the trip to Sinnoh, right? Anyway, progress is rolling on the second slots, so check out the journal if you're interested:

The Pokemon Gen IV Tribute R. II (Last Upd. 31.07)
We started the Pokemon Generation IV Tribute successfully in January, now its time for the 2nd round which means that (almost) all Pokemon Gen IV Pokemon are again available to claim for the usual no background & Pokemon performs one of its moves or abilities.
Every artist can claim up to 5 Pokemon this time, but only ONE at a time, you can claim the 2nd etc. Pokemon AFTER you submitted your first entry for our art collaboration!
Rules:
Up to 5 Pokemon per artist
Only one at a time
Pokemon drawn in your own style and methods, but without a background, submitted in a PNG file format and with a size of 1000 pixels width and more please
You are not only claiming a Pokemon but also the Move or ability it performs
Deadline is 1 Month per Pokemon, starting on the day you are claiming a Pokemon
Everyone who participated in Round I or not can choose up to 5 of the Pokemon!
You don't have to choose Moves from Gen IV, anything from before or after is just as okay!

These past six weeks had been rougher than not, so much to the point that I ended up abandoning drawing for a while in favor of a music project deadline, family oriented business and a new role as a Submissions Judge at OverClocked Remix! And while it's easy for me to say I'm enjoying the latter, it also meant I delayed finishing off this little fella a little too long. But it's there now, and that's what matters.

Stunky is a version exclusive to Pokémon Pearl and has the ever-so-cool type combination of Poison/Dark, meaning Psychic moves can't hit it unless the attacker has Miracle Eye - and therefore the only weakness it has is ground-type moves. Unless the opponent has a strong ground-type Pokémon like Diglett, it's a very handy one to use in Little Cup conditions and a fantastic check against ghost types.

But taking away the meta-game, it's also one of a few Pokémon that could learn the then-new Hidden Machine move Defog without having wings or long extremities as part of their anatomy. The move itself reduces the target’s evasiveness and blows away any entry hazards, and can also be used as a field move to clear away dense fog. It's in the same reason as to why Diglett can somehow learn Aerial Ace even though only its head is visible, or Wooper can learn Dynamic Punch even though it has no arms. It was an interesting subject for me to tackle, so I approached it as if Stunky used its tail to waft the fog away from the playing field. (It also leaves an interesting question as to how the heck its evolution Skuntank would get rid of it as the tail became more attached to the body...)

It took me a while to sketch down a pose I was happy with, and when I did, I wanted to emphasize how the tail could get used like a giant fan, with similar layering tricks from when I did Vibrava back in the Generation III tribute. This is also one of those times where I didn't do after-effects in GIMP, but rather focused on being careful with my brushes in ProCreate and even being cautious with the smudge tool to soften up the movement effect and the fog. All in all, this was steady work and I'm glad it turned out the way it did - and here's to hoping my next project sub won't take another 6 weeks!
