Description "I shall go so far that people will be seized with terror at the sight of each of my works of 'living' art"
-Egon Schiele, Letter to his uncle, Leopold Czihaczek, September 1, 1911

A homage to the painfully sensitive portraits and self-portraits of Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele (1890-1918). As a regular motif to his work, Schiele accompanied and accentuated the body language of his figures with the language of the hands. The collective despair of World War I was reproduced in artists' portrayal of the human body as sorrowful. The excessive individualism and psychological malaise conveyed by the portraits of Viennese expressionists severely contrasted the veneration and beauty shown by the masters of previous generations, such as Gustav Klimt or Hans Mackart.

Citation: Title of artwork and excerpt were influenced by Jean- Louis Gaillemin's book "The Egoist" published by Discoveries in New York.

While the figure is more full than Schiele's normal figure studies you have a knock down dragged out home run with this piece. It is ABSOLUTLY wonderful. The hands/color scheme and shadowing are extrordinary. You are extremely talented!

This is a great portrait of Egon Schiele! You really got the rawness, the way he did skin and flesh with the painfully red fingers, and the stiff, uncomfortable pose. I really love it.

I gave a rather civilized laugh after reading your comment because upon speculation, it does have Sean's likeness! I love the idiosyncrasy and affectation of Egon Schiele's portraits. They are very human. Whereas artists like Klimt would immortalize the great ladies of Vienna as beautiful Madonnas or goddesses, Schiele treated his models severely and with vulnerability. He projected them on a background with no points of reference and devoid of all accessories. Upon being rendered, his models received a new and sickly identity that made them part of the Schielian brotherhood.
