Description An urban landscape drawing depicting the Whitfield area of Dundee as it would have looked ten years ago. I started this picture two or three years ago but didn't get round to colouring it in til today.

Whitfield was one of many huge council estates built in the late 60s to early 70s. There was a wide variety of public housing - it most prominently consisted of two 16-storey slab block 'multis' (which I jokingly thought looked like two big cardboard boxes dramatically towering over the skyline) and over 120 deck access 'Skarne blocks' built in a design similar to that of the Swedish system they were designed from. There were also numerous walk-up blocks and low-rise housing.

The district became one of the most run-down in the country by the late 1980s and from that point an extensive regeneration program spurned from it. Even over the last decade Whitfield has changed a bit. While the lower buildings in the foreground such as the walk-up blocks still exist (but are earmarked for demolition), the two multis and most of the lower 'skarne blocks' in the background have since been demolished in an ongoing regeneration project.

Today only a dozen or so of the Skarne blocks remain and are now owned by housng associations. Some nice (and some not-so-nice) low-rise houses have been constructed in recent years, but seem to lack the character of the original estate, though the quality of housing has vastly improved.

Doesn't have much of the tower of London look.

If you do you'll find it to be very different. Most of the walkup blocks are gone, and the multis and flats built on the hill are gone too. The houses are all still there though ^^.

Ah yes, I remember going to see these being demolished. We had to watch from the car park at the other side of the Tay, and the explosion's sound-waves didn't reach us until just after the dust settled!

I watched them both from the park at the end of Balgillo Road (that's about as near as I could get at the time). I still miss those buildings and others from the old whitfield, but hey ho

When the Derby Street Multis came down this year, I was in Whitfield doing a delivery when it happened. The blowdown made the ground shake all the way over there!

I haven't yet been to Dundee (hope to remedy that soon though ), but this reminds me very much of Glasgow. It seems that pre-fab buildings were quite popular with town planners (but no so popular with the residents) in Scotland during the 60's & 70's. Nice job on the pic.

Some of these buildings weren't built to last. The council is still committing the same problem today with the buildings that replace them.

I hate 1970's architecture, I think it's disgusting.

Ahh, the glamour of concrete public housing blocks. Exotic Soviet-style living on a budget!

My friend lives in one of the Skarne block houses. Amazingly smart design, but noisy children upstairs and outside.

I've done pizza deliveries to those houses. The deck access design that interlinked the blocks no longer exists but I don't mind visiting them since they're more interesting than some of the other places I go to.

My friend orders pizzas a lot. You've probably delivered to him no doubt.

Yes... the city council of Dundee didn't seem to think so as of late though XD.

Nope, just a bunch of regeneration ideas, though the area around my Dad's place has changed a lot over the past 20 years through similar projects, it's strange that the more things change, the more things stay the same.
