in Middle school I love drawing tattoos on my self. I made me feel like an adult, but now that I'm able to get one I can't bring my self to do It. I guess its the fear of the unknown. I don't know how its going to look in the future and I don't know how much I'm going to like it. The heart can change, but I think I want to keep my skin looking as young as possible.

It all depends on the nature of the fur. Is it long and bristly? Is it short and velvety? Does it stick close to the body? Do the hairs overlap one another? Is the fur well groomed? By observing the picture, it seems that the fur of this particular individual varies in how it behaves. As in most areas seem to stick close to the skin while other areas are more unruly. It is possible that the fur is dyed, or maybe the skin has been modified to create distinct patterns.
...I don't know, maybe it's just aliens...

in one setting i read something about there were 'gentoos' - it wasnt like a classical tattoo, rather a modification that influences the fur color in specific patterns

I saw a cat that got a scar and the fur grew back white... so
something like that maybe? I don't know if getting a scar would
hurt more than the actually tattoo though.

That is actually a kind of body modification, scarification! The skin is either cut away or melted/burned, its excruciatingly painful, but the results are permanent, and look really cool if done correctly.

Ahh, tattoos are fun, and yet I have none. =C
I've actually been wondering how a furry anthro would go about getting a tattoo. Perhaps a dye or some other method of permanently altering the color of the fur itself. There's freeze-branding, but that causes the fur to grow back white. Perhaps we'll never know, though Panton-Skye's approach is rather interesting.

I had a few ideas back when I was into Furries. Namely using needles tipped with a virus that would inject genetic material that would cause the fur color to change. Once the fur grew would again it would carry the new color. Of course to do it right they'd have to shave the area, tattoo it with both ink and the virus so they could see where it was being applied and then take the weeks to month for it to grow back out. Plus it would only have a rough outline due the fact the fur spreads out as opposed to keeping to a fine line, so it would only be useful for things like tribal tattoos or new markings.
