I look forward to seeing it! I'd go ahead and accept it for you but the competition is the group's leader's thing. So I really don't know how she's organizing the folders for it.

Thank you . In a good strong light (especially sunlight) his colours and markings are pretty striking anyway so it didn't need too much to really emphasise them!

FurLined In reply to AuroraShadows [2010-03-09 18:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks . I'm not sure if I should have shot it with a bit more depth of field to bring the tip of his nose and his iris patterns a little more into focus, although I kind of like the softened pattern by his irises being out of focus.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AuroraShadows In reply to FurLined [2010-03-11 17:17:22 +0000 UTC]

I like the soft look of his irises. But I agree that it might have looked better if the nose was a little more in focus. But it's still an amazing shot.
How do you get such great shots of your cats? I've always wanted to take beautiful pictures of my cats like your pictures but they never sit still for me. And if I try to take a close-up picture like this on they always end up sniffing the camera! Do you take them farther away and them crop them or what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FurLined In reply to AuroraShadows [2010-03-11 18:29:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, having a digital SLR with a fast lens does help - particularly with snapping cats indoors. It means I don't have to resort to using a flash most of the time and I can get a relatively shallow depth of field (to throw the background clutter of my flat out of focus). My cats are sometimes interested in my camera, so I do have the same problem of them sniffing it at times - as I photograph them fairly often that helps a bit and I don't have to get that close with the lenses I have. Sunshine through a window is a great help too - they'll often bask in it which helps keep them still and it provides good quality light for taking photographs .

Most of my photos are tweaked a bit from the original - I'd have never got into photography in the film era as I'm crap at framing shots through the viewfinder - I can figure out decent angles and roughly the right sort of frame but I tend to have to crop them afterwards after spending a little time thinking what would work best. I also tweak the colour/light balances a little as the cameras auto settings rarely get it quite right!

This particular photo was part of me experimenting with a new external flash for my camera - the base photo was interesting, but wasn't great - but thinking on it afterwards I did like the light on his face and he was square on to the camera, so I figured a close crop of his features would be quite striking. Here's the original shot if you're interested so you can see what it evolved from (most of my photos aren't adjusted quite so much from the original as this one though!).

Ok wow...thank you so much for all the tips! Seriously...it was really helpful. Most people if I ask them a question they just kind of blow it off. I can't wait to try it out! (I just need to get my Photoshop back)
