Description I have a small collection of Chadogu, the tools used in Tea Ceremony, and I thought I would take some nice, artsy pictures of them. It's no fun if they just collect dust in a corner.

This is a Tamba-yaki chawan. Tamba-yaki is made in the village of Tachikui, located in the the Hyogo prefecture, the capital of which is Kobe. Tamba-yaki originated in the medieval period, about 800 years ago. The charm of Tamba-yaki is in the glaze. The glaze is natural, resulting in beautiful drip glazes and earthy colors.

Tamba-yaki is also considered one of the Rokkoyo, the Six Old Kilns. The Rokkoyo are Tamba, Seto, Tokoname, Shigaraki, Bizen, and Echizen. These are the kilns that are rather incorrectly considered the oldest pottery centers in Japan and pre-date pottery styles influenced by the continent (such as the Hagi and Karatsu styles). There are in fact several other pottery centers that are just as and even older, but because these six are so well known and were the leading styles in Japan's ceramic golden age, the Momoyama period, they are extremely popular.

The tea dish next to the bowl is from the tea ceremony demonstration at the Kitano Odori, the annual dance recital put on by the maiko and geiko of Kamishichiken.

Cha-iro literally translates as "tea color", but it actually means light brown.

Actually, I find have an assortment of cups, bowls, and teapots to be much more fun than having matching sets. It makes things more interesting .
