Hey, awesome headpiece explanation! Any quick tip on the eyes? How should I attach them to look the best? :3

gaernavi In reply to Dudu228 [2013-01-03 03:36:17 +0000 UTC]

I think it would depend on the kind of eyes you are using. If you use flat-backed eyes like I did, the best thing I found was to attach them with a dab of hot glue. It means working quickly and you really get one chance, but it holds well. Another option is a good tacky glue. I may have also hidden a couple of stitches behind the eyes to pull them together/make slight curves in the fabric for eyebrows, but I can't remember. Best of luck, and let me know if I can be of help.

Hey man, thanks for the reply!

I'm not sure I want to use glue, I don't trust it. >_>

Do you think small stitches around the eyes would do the job?

What kind of eyes are you using? If they are fabric or something it should work fine.

Yeah, I'll go with fleece, and attach it with stitches. Less dangerous to cuddle!

Do you have to revers the diagram to get the tentacles right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gaernavi In reply to sistersuehms [2012-10-30 01:58:06 +0000 UTC]

I am not sure I understand your question...the diagram shows half of the pieces for the head, and after making this half, you make the other the same way but the mirror image (reverse). You don't turn the tentacles right side out until the very end, with the rest of the plushie (though you can turn them inside-out earlier and put them back to check and see that they turned out ok). I hope that helps, and let me know if I can make things clearer.

I'll be posting some pictures of him :3 I'm almost done actually. I need to sew on the tail and then finish sewing everything on. His head sucks though ; w ; But then again this is the first time I made something this complicated.

Kanashii-Sorrow [2012-05-12 21:31:58 +0000 UTC]

This is really helpful, but I do have a question about the tentacles. I'm having a lot of difficulty with them. When I put DE and C together (9Just those, I have nothing else done.)) and I turn them inside out they look really ugly and don't seem to be the right shape, ((the middle puckers up)) I'm not sure what I've done. Is it supposed to look that way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gaernavi In reply to Kanashii-Sorrow [2012-05-13 11:43:22 +0000 UTC]

The tentacles are particularly tricky, since they have that point in the middle where they meet (the little red star on the diagram) and the fabric naturally wants crumple up there. I think that is what you are talking about, but please let me know if that isn't the case. What I do to help with those areas is to sew the square-shaped seam on the diagram to give myself more space, and then carefully cut the seam allowance with sharp scissors in that tight corner to loosen up the fabric, taking care not to cut so deep that it reaches your stitch and makes a hole when you turn it right side out.

Another thought is to sew the other DE to C for the other side of the head and see if you get the same result. I hope that helps and please let me know if you have questions Best of luck on your Toothless and I know he/she will come out great!

I just don't understand what pieces F,D, and E are for....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gaernavi In reply to xBluebirdx [2011-07-19 11:20:16 +0000 UTC]

They make the back side of the "tentacles" on Toothless's head. If you mentally slide part B in the diagram up to cover F and part C to cover D and E, you will see the colored lines align and that is where you sew.

Thanks, this does make it MUCH clearer! I nearly sewed the crest into the wrong seam. I think labelling each piece would help, like head side, head top, and jaw. I've not made a soft toy for a long time but I started when I was about 12 designing my own, and I'm now 49, so I'm no newbie! But I think my daughter will love this for her birthday
