Description So I did the volcano speed paint earlier and decided to get some landscape(ish) doodles going. This popped out of my cranium after watching the last witch hunter and seeing that giant tree in there. this one isnt as epic....but it has Faeries. I was thinking about making this a 2-3 part series...keeping the blue light trail going through some more scenery..maybe I will maybe I wont. anyways 3 hours in photoshop enjoy

Heya!Β  Β  Here's my 100-watcher critique I promised! Β
Have a coffee , lay back and prepare to get critiqued!Β

I'd like to start by stating that at first sight, I though: "Ooh, this is nice".
I think this piece shows you have a lot of talent and artistic sense. I particularly enjoy the colour choices. The autumn colours, the sunset, the very dark tree and the dark clouds make a rather melancholic scene. This is also thanks to the fact that the colours are not overly saturated, which would have changed the mood completely. The electric blue ribbon adds just the perfect touch of contrast and visual tension to make this piece eye-catching and visually interesting. Together with the sun glowing through the roots, it gives the picture a magical feel.
I rather like the design of the tree. The apparent roots, the twisted branches and the setting you put it in, standing proudly on a rocky cliff make for quite the fantasy tree.
The overall piece makes me think of those epic fantasy concept art pieces for video games.

However, even though the general look of the piece is great, once you look at it closely, the details are a little underwhelming.
I'm not going to go over all the things I don't quite like but I'll rather try to give you the best advice I can.
First I think that you may have chosen a resolution too high for the level of detail you decided to put in the picture. This isn't really a huge mistake but you should at least reduce the resolution available for viewing unless this is essential to see some detail that you're proud of. Here, zooming in has only led me to see lots of ugly things like round brush strokes that I don't want to see, and I think it's a shame. From what I understand this is a speedpaint, so I would suggest starting with a low resolution, approximately screen size, because the full finished artwork won't be seen from any closer. Plus, this will probably help your software's performance when painting.Β
Something that strikes me is those 5 black things that are hanging (or falling, I'm not sureΒ  ) from the tree. I really have no idea what they are. I get that this is a speedpaint and that you don't want to spend too much time detailing, but I don't think you should add something if it's unrecognisable and not even aesthetically pleasing.Β
The last piece of advice I'd give you is to stop using foliage brushes. I too thought they were great when I started digital painting, because painting leaves one by one can be daunting. But it's a trapΒ  ! Foliage and other tree stamping brushes will ruin your realism because they look flat and transparent, and most of all they look cheap af. Plus, they have very little variation so they look weird in large patches. What to do then? Well you have to paint each leaf one by one.... just kidding ! In fact using ordinary textured brushes, like the one you used on the trunk, is often sufficient. Imagination does the rest.

I would have more to say but I think this is the most important. Overall I think your work is very promising and has many qualities. The saying says the devil is in the detailsΒ and that's particularly true for you. Keep practising, but most of all, have fun. Happy painting!Β  Β

Haha Ty, I very much enjoyed your critique as I presumed I would. You clearly spent a bit of time clearly looking at the piece and that is very much appreciated. I chose this peice for you because its kinda on of my weaker areas when it comes to painting. I fully wiht everything presented in this critique. the foliage brushes were fun to use, mostly a cop out considering time constraints I put on myself. the resolution...thats just me being lazy and not changing it before posting really....one of the many things I over look when posting on DA here. the things hanging on the tree....meh wasnt really sure about those either...was imagining little fearie cities hanging in the city or something....but your right considering its not totally necessary for the painting in general.
Anways, thank you again, cya around

Mine was: the lyrics to the hanging tree as sung by adrisaurus on youtube...
