Honestly, I don't know much about classic "pre-Geoff Johns" Hal.  My first introduction to the character was during the Death of Superman arc.  I loved him as a villain  

There's a great line in Flashpoint Paradox where Hal is basically going on a suicide mission, and he basically says "I've always known I was supposed to do something great, and I think that this is it...so the last thing that I am is afraid".  He's courageous, for sure, but to me that's different than having strength of will.

In the Batman Beyond universe, Green Lantern is a Tibetan monk named Kai-Ro...THAT makes sense to me, since eastern monks are known for their willpower.  Being a former marine, John Stewart would have great willpower.  Even Kyle Raynor, being an artist, has to have enough willpower to practice every day to perfect his craft.  To me, Hal seems to be characterized by his LACK of willpower, even though he has tremendous courage...but, like you said, maybe that's a recent thing and it's not central to his character.  I honestly have no idea, since I never read any of the Silver Age stuff.

I'm 49 and Hal's GL has always been my favorite
single superhero, so I'm very 'old school'. My
introduction to John was his brief stint in the
late 70's, and later in the Justice League cartoon. You make a great argument for John, but read up on Hal after his return from the dead in Rebirth. You may like what you see. Oh, and by the way; DON'T judge him by his animated series or that horrible GL movie!

I don't know if I'd like to see a completely original character, but I wouldn't mind Jade being Green Lantern....

He makes more sense to me as a Green Lantern than Hal does.  Being an ex-marine, he would have a highly developed will.  Combined with the imagination it takes to be an architect, it makes sense for the ring to choose him.  Hal has courage, but he seems like he has no willpower at all.  He just does whatever he feels like.  It's a strange thing for him to wield a weapon that's powered by willpower.

Totally agree.  I like Kyle Raynor a lot, too, but John is my favorite.
