Description FIRST: The Triumvirate
PREVIOUS: Monsters
NEXT: Dracula

(EDIT: I have decided to call the organization of vampire hunters the Quincey Morris Foundation after the man who died to stop Dracula the first time in 1890.)

Thousands of years ago, the legendary city of Atlantis was lost beneath the waves. However, there was a group of survivors. There was a secret society that worshiped a god unknown to the rest of the Atlanteans. It foretold of the city's destruction and offered them a way to survive and to inherit the treasures of Atlantis. In return, it demanded one thing: food. As the city sank, the followers' bodies were altered, taking on the features of their aquatic deity.
Over the millennia, the Atlanteans would contact isolated fishing villages, offering them treasure in exchange for human sacrifices in order to reproduce and also to feed their "god." The creature they worship has been known by many names throughout the ages, but the Quincey Morris Foundation has given it the code name of "Leviathan." The treasure the Atlanteans offer the surface dwellers is orichalcum, a rare and precious gold-like metal.
Leviathan is huge, being about one hundred feet long. It's worshippers believe it is a god because of it's immense size, power, and because it has lived for thousands of years. However, it can be killed but is incredibly difficult to do so because of it's healing factor. It can communicate telepathically and can secrete a mutagen than can turn humans into Atlanteans. It takes decades for humans to fully mutate, but changes begin swiftly. First, gills develop on the neck and the fingers and toes become webbed. Over years, the skin becomes pale and then scaly, hair recedes before disappearing altogether, and the eyes enlarge to adapt to the darkness of the depths of the ocean. Early stage Atlanteans can breed with each other and normal humans to create offspring that resemble humans at first but will also mutate as they mature. However, the Atlanteans lose their fertility as their mutation progresses, their genes becoming unstable. For this reason, the Atlanteans offer Leviathan human sacrifices to create new mutants. However, only those with the strongest genes are selected and the rest are devoured.
The "Leviathan" is based on the Leviathan from the Old Testament, Dagon and Cthulhu from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, the Kraken from Scandinavian mythology, and the Aboleths from Dungeons and Dragons.
