Description FIRST: The Triumvirate
PREVIOUS: Dracula
NEXT: Bathory

LEFT TO RIGHT:
Orlok (circa 1838)
Orlok (circa 1786)
The Bird of Death
Orlok (circa 1945)

(EDIT: I have decided to call the organization of vampire hunters the Quincey Morris Foundation after the man who died to stop Dracula the first time in 1890.)

(EDIT 2: I changed Orlok's first name to Graf. The previous name Radu was Dracula's brother's name and was a reference to Radu from the Subspecies film series. I know "Graf" is the German equivalent to "Count," but it is also a name, though usually a surname.)

ORLOK
Real Name:
 Graf Orlok
Aliases: Count Orlok, The Bird of Death, Belial's Seed
Year Born: 1443
Year Turned: 1477
Country of Origin: Romania
Titles: Boyar, Vampire Lord
Height: 6'3"
Vampire Sire: Dracula
Generation: One
Strength Level: 27
The story goes is that when Vlad the Impaler killed the Boyars who betrayed and murdered his father and brother, he replaced them with Boyars that would be loyal to him, some of which were lowborn. Orlok was one of these lowborn Boyars and would become his most loyal vassal. After Vlad returned from the dead as Dracula, Orlok was the first he made a vampire in 1477. Orlok is considered to be Dracula's second-in-command, confidant, and best friend. Like Dracula, he has a castle located in the remote parts of the Carpathian Mountains.
Unlike many other vampires, Orlok has no real plans of conquests, only concerned with feeding his eternal hunger for blood and spreading death wherever he goes. He cares little for the company of humans and other vampires, being a recluse. As side from Dracula, the only friends he has are his pet mischief of rats. The soil in which he sleeps is infected with the Black Death, and his beloved pets spread the Plague whenever he travels to a new land.
Again unlike other vampires, he doesn't care about his physical appearance, retaining a ghoulish visage most of the time. But he can assume a more presentable appearance when needed. Despite being a recluse, he does enjoy attending Carnival. He believes it is the time where mankind shows its true nature, indulging in every vice before hypocritically abstaining from their natural urges during Lent. Just like how the mortals wear masks during Carnival, he wears his human "mask."
In 1838, Orlok traveled to Germany after purchasing property in Wismar with the aid of his human familiar, a real estate agent named Knock. After Knock sent his employee, Thomas Hutter, to Orlok's castle to complete the purchase, Orlok sailed to Wismar, bringing the Black Death. Orlok nearly met his end when he was feeding on Hutter's wife, Ellen. Distracted, he failed to notice the rising sun and fell into his death-sleep. Amateur vampire hunter, Professor Bulwer, drove a stake into Orlok's heart, but Ellen had already died of blood loss. However, Thomas Hutter had also succumbed to vampirism and recovered his master's body, and Orlok would go on to establish himself as the Vampire Lord of Germany. This was all part of Dracula's plan, not only to strengthen the Vampire Underworld in Germany but to also be a test run for his own voyage to England.
During both World Wars, Orlok naturally sided with Germany. The Quincey Morris Foundation of monster hunters had joined the Allied Forces and were travelling across Europe with the soldiers in order to eradicate the vampire population. Similarly, Orlok used the Central Powers and later the Axis Powers to spread misery and death.
In the aftermath of the Vampire Purge, Orlok was left as one of the few surviving Vampire Lords. Since vampires grow stronger over the years, and with Dracula apparently slain in 1890, no other vampire is as powerful as Orlok. Unlike more ambitious vampires such as Báthory, Nachzehrer, and Mamuwalde, he makes no claims for the throne as the King of Vampires. Perhaps it's because he's one of the few that know Dracula had survived.

Notes:
I based Count Orlok on the portrayal of the character by Max Schreck as well as Klaus Kinski's portrayal in the 1979 remake and its 1988 sequel, Vampire in Venice/Nosferatu in Venice. As with the 1979 remake, Orlok isn't killed by sunlight but goes into his death-sleep. Also, Hutter becomes a vampire as well in the ending of that film. Not sure if he would be a vampire spawn or a full vampire. Despite being a "Lord," he has no formal faction/coven/house of his own, preferring to do his own thing. The idea for Orlok is for him to be a boogeyman for both the vampire hunters and the vampires. This is mostly due to him being a recluse and him knowing that Dracula is still "alive" and that the fractured Vampire Underworld is just a ruse to lure out the traitors within the ranks. Traitors that Orlok hunts down.
For 1838 Orlok, I made his suit sepia tone as a reference to the silent film. In the film, Orlok had tufts of hair around his ears, but I decided to exclude that. I also made his skin yellowish to give it a decayed look.
His 1786 look is based on Klaus Kinski from Vampire in Venice. Kinski didn't want to wear the makeup again, so that's why he has hair. But it gives us a look at what Orlok would have looked like before becoming a vampire. The Carnival setting of the film also gave me inspiration for Orlok's view on humanity. He's nihilistic and sees humans as hypocrites and that how people celebrate Carnival before Lent shows people's true nature. I imagine him traveling to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in modern times.
For Orlok's gargoyle/demon form, I combined a vulture, rat, and hyena. A vulture because Orlok is called the "Bird of Death," a rat due to his connection with rats and the Black Death, and hyena because the filmmakers used a striped hyena as a "werewolf" in the 1922 film. The Skeksis from the Dark Crystal were also an inspiration. If you look closely, he still has his buckteeth. As a reference to the moniker from the film, I also call this form the "Bird of Death."
I made 1945 Orlok completely bald despite being more "rejuvenated." Other modern interpretations of Orlok or characters based on him are also often made completely bald, like Kurt Barlow from the 1979 adaptation of Salem's Lot, the Master from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or the Reapers from Blade 2. His jacket is a holdover from his World War II days. Though he sided with Germany, he isn't really a Nazi. He wouldn't care for their cause, just as long as he was able to cause suffering and death.

Oh, I love this. Especially his form that looks like the hybrid of a bird and a rat. I really hope that you eventually do a more detailed entry on Carmilla.
