It depends how much it lets you determine your own settings. I'm not sure of the specs of your camera but I know some compacts allow you adjust the F stop etc though ultimately most don't have the same range as some lenses you can get with an SLR so you might not be able to achieve quite such an extreme shallow depth of field.

I've been changing the settings of my camera.
And I achieved something close to that, but I think I still need to get a new camera, anyway Thanks!

What size is the doll on the header?
And where did you get his shirt?

Before I havn't had the slightest idea how these photos are taken, and why I can't get mine to look like this! Now I realize my camera is to simple and hasn't got any of these adjustments. : (

What camera would you recomend to photograph small dolls?

Awesome tutorial, by the way! I'm sure if I'de have the equipment I could get going by that.

If you're looking for the level of control with a camera that would allow you to dictate elements of a shot such as the depth of field the only way to really do it would be to get an SLR. Many compacts are great and they're getting smarter all the time but very few if any offer the level of control you get from SLRs.

It's probably worth having a proper dig around and reading up on things but base level digital SLRs like the Canon 1100D generally start at around £400 and offer all the manual control you could ever want, they're a great place to start.

I've been watching reviews about Canon EOS 1100 D and it's just such an awesome camera! I've been through a few more tutorials, and now I can totaly see why SLR are so good. Thank you very much for the advice!

I hope it is ok if I ask one more thing, What do you think of the Canon 450D? I read it is very much like the 1100D, but it is much more affordable for me. Is it worth to save money till I can buy the 1100 or is a 450D good enough for a begginer for 2-4 years at least?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Geekisthecolour In reply to Adoredoll [2012-02-22 17:24:42 +0000 UTC]

The 450D's a great camera, it's actually the one I had before my current one but it's from what I guess you could call the last generation of Canon's. It's a fantastic camera all round and would definitely serve you well for a few years but there's been a lot of improvements since it was released so technically speaking the 1100D is probably a better camera on specs alone but the 450D is definitely a great camera still.

Awesome, this is why I'm desperately saving (ha, yeah) towards a 50mm lens that can get nice shallow depth of field. I'm pretty sure my kit lens, while versatile, gets to about 4.6 at its widest.

Although, that 4.6 shot doesn't look bad - Chronos is starting to come into focus without the rug: not the best, possibly, but at a slightly different angle it'd get both of their faces.

Do you use manual settings only?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Geekisthecolour In reply to wildefae [2010-07-03 13:53:18 +0000 UTC]

Yup ^^ I always use full manual though if you're not in a tricky lighting situation aperture priority is also great, especially if you don't really have time to be messing about trying to tweak settings.

wildefae In reply to wildefae [2010-07-02 17:42:41 +0000 UTC]

(Sorry, that last question is unclear - I'm asking, sort of, as opposed to "aperture priority" or other ways of semi-manual setting and letting the camera do its thing elsewhere.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Geekisthecolour In reply to sh11nju [2010-06-29 07:02:08 +0000 UTC]

I use two different lenses depending on the focal length I want to use, a Canon 50mm f/1.4 or a Tamrom 28-7mm f/2.8, both give really nice DoF but the 50mm definitely has the edge XD
