Ok so here is an early peek at my queen costume. I am trying to decide which skirt I like better. The first one is almost finished, but I don't think it looks right for a primary.
I really like the second one better because I think it will flatter my form more but I have to build it from scratch. So what is your opinion?
I will be uploading sketches of designs 1-8, probably this afternoon. I put a link on here to them. This dress doesn't even look much like to first version. I am ok with that.
As on of my photo teachers told me "You must let the art take you where it wants to go, trying to force it into a particular design when it want to go some where else can just kill the process." That only works when it what you want and not a client, which is what this is.
'Oh and she has a name now, Malka. I was going to go with Amanda because o the the tattoos (see other work) but I decided I like that name better. For any Larpers out there who play LAV you know why. *evil grin* Yes, she will act like what her name sake is. For those who don't know, google the word "Malkavain"

Ooh I'd be tempted to keep the textured side too, it's just so *wraith*. It actually looks like it could have been grown on a hive.
The gauntlets sound like a good idea! Also a good application for a fabric that doesn't want to bend much. Another idea (though I can't tell from the picture if it's a viable one) would be to use some of the black, shiny material somewhere on the shoulders; then the eye would be drawn from the very top of the dress all the way down to the bottom, and back up again.
Ahh, whatever you do withit, I bet it's going to look fabulous.

I like the second skirt better as well, though I'd be tempted to make the black overskirt from the same glorious material the sleeves are made from!

I keep trying to remember where I got the sleeve fabric. It is really soft but still has cool body to it. I think I got it at Joann's. I will probably go there after work tomorrow to browse some more.
I have had some weird issues with the fabric the over skirt is made with, but I think I have ironed them out. It just doesn't like bending in certain ways.

If you can get more of that sleeve material, or something similar, I definitely think it would be worth it and unite the entire outfit wonderfully. The fabric you have now is gorgeous but is shinier and 'blacker' than any other part of the costume - this draws the attention to that area where you have the strongest contrast: purple and a very shiny, crisp black.
With the top part of the costume being in matte black it becomes dimmer in contrast.
Or, alternatively, if you keep that very black shiny fabric for the skirt how about adding a few very black, shiny touches to the upper part of the body as well, so it's not just the bottom half with the stronger contrast?

I was originally going to use the shinny fabric for the upper sleeves but it doesn't want to bend and work properly. So I opted for the other.
I am currently working on Arm guards/gauntlets for the dress, (much like some males *Todd* have and a couple of queens) that will incorporate the darker fabric into the arms. That way the dress as a whole will be tied together more. (I will post image after my burns heal...hot glue gun + noisy puppy + booze + tired + cat harassing puppy = burns from stupidity that really hurt
The only other option, if I can't find more of that fabric, is to pull both sleeves off and re-sew them in reverse because the underside of that fabric is very dark but it doesn't have as great of te>

I agree, that whole outfit is amazing. Yeah, I think I'd go for the second skirt, it more queenly (and I agree that the second will probably be more flattering for you)

I am really leaning towards the second skirt to.
I left the dress on the dummy last night, and my husband was getting ready for work this morning. He walked into the living room, he seen it already, but he saw it again out of the corner of his eye and went "ahh...oh yeah" Darn getting up at 3am, really screws with your perspectives.

Thanks, I been working really hard on it. I am really leaning towards making the second skirt and just keeping the first one as back up in case of some one spilling something on me at a convention. (I have that kind of luck for some reason)
