Description I meant to get this done almost a year ago.....^.^;

A meme started by Sonar15 for her Sonic Underdogs, a group dedicated to fan created characters who are well thought out and developed who do not receive as much attention as they deserve. The message of the group is bring more focus to the positive side of the fandom. There are those of us that exist that put time, effort and a lot of thought into what we create, and how we represent something we love.

This one is for every Hedgehog, Rabbit, Dog, Cat, Wolf, Fox or any other species that is 'popular' in the fandom.

I chose Haydrian for this as he's more than once come under fire for the simple fact that I picked a species from the series that was already popular, but that I have loved for it's own real life aspects since before I even knew what Sonic was.  Some one I looked up to as a fellow artist once told me I should change what Haydrian was because hedgehogs had been over done, but by that point, to have changed Haydrian's species would have also changed who he was, and even though I've actually played with concepts for that, I have never been able to see him as anything other than what he is and still consider it to be Haydrian.
But rather than let myself become discouraged because of this, or give in because I'd been criticized by some one I respected for their art, I became even more determined to make Haydrian into a unique, engaging character with a story I could be proud of, and have fun with.  This one moment of criticism might not have made me reconsider Haydrian's species, but it lead to a whole bunch of my own world building with in the frame work of the world of Mobius and the comic series.  So I guess I owe that person regardless, because if not for that, my own locations of Merona, Ale'noda, Brook Haven, Abbony and Little Spar, as well as many other characters I've created might not have existed. Tales of Mobius might not be developing as it has, into it's own stand alone story that only resides in the world of the Sonic comics, but is otherwise independent of it. And Haydrian himself certainly might not have been as dynamic and refined as he is today.  And I'm still working on his details even further. (Like,what all does he actually carry in his back pack and what might he acquire in the future.)

So even if a character is from a species that a lot of people like to work with, it does not mean they can not be great and worth getting to know.

Thanks to my friend and fellow deviant/fandom nerd, CheVD , for help with lay out, and text.

Glad you joined it! And dont worry, there was no deadline for it. Anyone can continue to make the meme if they want to. ;;w;;

Oh, no, I know there was no deadline.  Just that I'd started the sketch for this several years ago and only now got it done.  Though, maybe that's not all bad.  Some of how I draw Haydrain has changed and improved over the last several years.

And I'm glad I got one done too.  I'd loved this meme ever since I saw how vehement Sonar was about being who she is despite having become quite well known and well liked, and the other version other people had contributed. And my own experience had sparked a message Haydrian and I wanted to share as well.

(Couldn't comment on the main page because Mobile made me reply to something else instead).

Love this group's idea.

Time to stop generalizing and assuming quickly when a character is "generic" based on one trait that they have that's considered "overrated".

I struggle with this when it comes to Star's Princess role - I've had a couple of people tell me that its either Mary Sueish or the idea gets an automatic eyeroll before I even explain it. I didn't make her a Princess just for a spotlight and other slapped on reasons - there's more to it.

Btw - I always liked Haydrian's design! He somewhat looks mythical appealing for some reason lol.

Yeah, doing a Princess character can end up with you fighting against the generalized category as well.  I think it was because, at one time, it was super, super popular for every other character to be a princess, and most people just used it as an excuse for a character to always get their way, or to have everyone always listening to them, and never getting into trouble.  Though some people could actually do some very good stories, like where you have a princess that is used to getting their way, things get turned on their head, and suddenly no one cares if she's a princess or not, and she has to cope with her title being empty.

I have my own character who is not really a 'princess', but she does belong to a family of importance.  In her case though, while she does take her duties seriously, and understands the importance of the position her family is in, she's not yet ready to spend the majority of her life in an official role, she dreams of freedom and exploring the stars, and takes off on galaxy hopping adventures when things are mostly routine and she can sneak off.  She also wants to make her own name, for her own deeds and accomplishments, and not just because some of her ancestors did memorable things. She doesn't like riding the coat tails of her family's fame. It feels too much like an easy out.  So instead, she goes places where people don't know her, where she can be just a common shmuck and if they come to know her for something, it's on her own merit.  Her entire crew is forbidden from referring to her by any of her titles from home outside of being Captian of the space cruiser.  Makes for an interesting character, as her preferred 'self' is blunt, forward, jovial, casual, carefree, adventurous, but she's also capable of drawing upon her 'proper' upbringing if she has to. But for the most part, she'd rather just be her brash self and leave the 'person of high standing' to someone else.

Aww, thanks.  I've had a lot of fun working on and refining him.  And there is probably a good reason for that. Haydrian's story ended up exploring a lot more of the part of Mobius' that is about 'magic' and the mythical. Haydrian himself grows up on the far northern border of Mercia, on a part of the planet that is still much more oriented in the time of knights, villages, and dragons, and less technologically advanced than places like Albion, Mobotropolis, and Angel Island. The early parts of his story explore Mercia and the Dragon Kingdoms rather then Northamer where the main FF are. His story is inspired a lot more by adventure fantasy rather than adventure sci-fi. As such, many of the characters he meets are also more medieval fantasy-inspired, like these three:

I also need to redraw all of these at some point too....  Plus get some drawing of some of my other male characters done. xp Marthia has a fellow librarian that is a sloth, I need to finish the wolf that works for the lumber mill/shipyard and just come up with more characters to fill my towns.

I love this so much. It's something that I definitely agree with and have strove to do with my own characters.

KT Cannon, Lauren Lockhart, and Blade Ross were all part of the "popular" species when they were originally conceived as Sonic-style characters. However (and I know I've told you this before, but this is for the benefit of those who don't know) what I noticed as I developed this series more and more is that the only thing truly Sonic-esque about them was their character designs—which weren't exactly the most original-looking in and of themselves, and this resulted in the gradual process of "humanizing" them to make KTC a completely independent project (by the way, I will still never be able to thank you enough for your assistance in helping me accomplish that ). It was never even an afterthought for KTC to take place on Mobius or any other fictional planet.
I've also intended for some other characters of mine who remain anthros to not look too much like Sonic fan characters...perhaps a mix of that style and a more straightforward anthro style (since I already have a straight anthro project as well in THE MYSTERIOUS MATT JOHNSON, there is also that to consider with characters not part of that series but who, oddly enough, are good friends with the main cast of MMJ). Again, their stories are in no way whatsoever connected to the Sonic universe, so I feel that their designs shouldn't reflect that quite strongly.

Is this based off the idea that image searching (any name) followed by "the Hedgehog" will result in no less than 28 recolored 'OC's that are illegitimate children of Shadow, Sonic, and Vector the Crocodile?

The idea of the group is to stand out from all of the recolors and rehashes yes.  It's meant to focus on characters people actually take the time to flesh out and make into something that stands on its own. And Haydrian was my own example of that long before I knew of this group and I've always believed in encouraging other artists to actually create a character that, even if they are still beginners, can be recognized as an individual.  I don't think I've ever had a 'recolor' of a character in any fandom, even when I was younger.  I wanted to make my own character inspired by a series, but not copied from.  Like, I don't even call Haydrian 'the hedgehog'. I tend to avoid that in everything but species listing on a profile. It just got really tacky sounding to me when every other FC I'd run across started becoming 'Something' the 'something'. Like, Sega doesn't even call Amy 'the Hedgehog'. She is Amy Rose, and half the time Tails isn't even 'the Fox', he's just Tails.

Call this something of a message to those who toss out any character simply because they are one of the popular species, letting them know that well-made characters in that grouping do exist, but also to creators of said characters that even if they pick a hedgehog for their species, they don't have to be confined to the molds set by Sonic, Silver, and Shadow and they should strive to break those molds.

Which makes me think.....I should also use one of my other characters and make one of these about the 'same muzzle' syndrome that happens when it comes to creating Sonic based characters. It makes sense for a hedgehog character to have a similar style muzzle (though it can still be modified like I did with older Hayde), but a cat should not look like a Hedgehog, and a Wolf should be distinguishable as a wolf, and a bug should be recognizable as a bug.  These are fundamentals of good character design. You should be able to tell what you are looking at at a glance if it is a species that is familiar to you. You should at least be able to tell what 'family' tree it comes from.

On that "Family Tree" argument.  Aren't they "Mobians", or mutated humans on a post-apocalyptic earth?  I understand your argument that they should all look different and not just "Sonic, but red and with dread-locks", but couldn't resist jabbing at it.

Pfft. Well, what I meant more was that you should probably be able to tell the difference between a canine based Mobian and a feline based Mobian by more than just a description.
Family canidae verses Family Felidae. I suppose I could have stayed one step lower and just mentioned genus instead.
And Mobians are Earth animals that mutated and went through an evolution cycle similar to humans (primative on through to civilization).
