Description This lovely lady (I'm guessing it is a girl ) took up residence out by our property light. Every evening just as the sun started to set she would start the task of building her web. I admire such diligence if I was a spider I would surely starve to death from pure laziness Such an amazing sight to watch, the kids and I had alot of fun watching her and it was great as we would just talk and enjoy hearing the sounds around us and watching nature happen. We did help her out since she was kind enough to allow me to take her picture and stick my camera in her face over 350+ times over a period of three days. The first night we found her a small grasshopper, the kids and I were mesmerized as she spun it up all nice and tidy like a mummy. While dealing with our catch a small moth flew in so we got to see how she dealt with two meals in her nest. The second night I am embarassed to say I unhooked her lovely web with my stupid tripod leg causing half of it to be utterly useless to her. Watching her deal with the broken web reminded me of a fastidious housekeeper with a no-nonesense air about her. She just went right over and salvaged what she could. Well, my son and I felt horrible causing such havock so we hunted and hunted and finally got lucky by finding one of those huge grasshoppers (the thing was as long if not longer than my finger and about as big around too). I think it was a fun fight for her it reminded me of times when I have caught a carp on my line Again we got to watch her wrap it up (I of course took pics of it) and she feasted and feasted. I think it took her 3 hours to finish with that thing. It must have been a good catch/meal for her as she didn't set up a new web for almost a week. In case you couldn't tell the kids and I had a blast watching her.

I have always known this as an orb weaver but, I found out it is actually known as a Barn Spider (Araneas cavaticus). E.B. White used a barn spider for the character Charlotte in "Charlottes' Web" very cool and I can see why My first link talks about it. Hope you enjoy the links and maybe learn something new

Very very nice. Naturally more DOF would be lovely, but overall it is a marvelous and well shot macro of an excellent subject.

Thank you so much She was a lovely lady who took up residence out by our flood light. She would build her web their every night and since we had lost our cable (without cable we don't get good reception so tv was out) the kids and I would go out and watch her build. We also watched her eat and even fed her The kids and I had our camp chairs and we would just sit out there mesmerized by her diligence it was a great learning experience for all three of us plus we got to talk and enjoy each other.

For these shots I relied on the handy dandy tripod

Ah yes, I remember these barn spiders (although they look a little different up here in New York) I used to move them when we would be stacking hay in the loft...how silly is that lol
The clarity is great, and the dark background really makes this little guy stand out...not sure what you want me to give you some advanced critique on, but I can't think of anything that I would change about this!
