Description This lovely lady (I'm guessing it is a girl ) took up residence out by our property light. Every evening just as the sun started to set she would start the task of building her web. I admire such diligence if I was a spider I would surely starve to death from pure laziness Well, since we had no t.v or internet the kids and I would go sit out on our folding camp chairs and watch her build. Such an amazing sight to watch, the kids and I had alot of fun watching her and it was great as we would just talk and enjoy hearing the sounds around us and watching nature happen. We did help her out since she was kind enough to allow me to take her picture and stick my camera in her face over 350+ times over a period of three days. The first night we found her a small grasshopper, the kids and I were mesmerized as she spun it up all nice and tidy like a mummy. While dealing with our catch a small moth flew in so we got to see how she dealt with two meals in her nest. The second night I am embarassed to say I unhooked her lovely web with my stupid tripod leg causing half of it to be utterly useless to her. Watching her deal with the broken web reminded me of a fastidious housekeeper with a no-nonesense air about her. She just went right over and salvaged what she could. Well, my son and I felt horrible causing such havock so we hunted and hunted and finally got lucky by finding one of those huge grasshoppers (the thing was as long if not longer than my finger and about as big around too). I think it was a fun fight for her it reminded me of times when I have caught a carp on my line Again we got to watch her wrap it up (I of course took pics of it) and she feasted and feasted. I think it took her 3 hours to finish with that thing. It must have been a good catch/meal for her as she didn't set up a new web for almost a week. In case you couldn't tell the kids and I had a blast watching her.

I have always known this as an orb weaver but, I found out it is actually known as a Barn Spider (Araneas cavaticus). E.B. White used a barn spider for the character Charlotte in "Charlottes' Web" very cool and I can see why My first link talks about it. Hope you enjoy the links and maybe learn something new

They are unbelievably well programmed by mother nature as fabulous weavers and predators. True children of Grandmother Spider.

Egggkk. Those awful things live near my house too. I have learned to never leave laundry out from October-December or there will be a surprise in my clothes

Nice capture though, I wouldn't be bold enough to get that close...or even use a power zoom.

Well they are handy at keeping the bugs down but, I wouldn't want them in my laundry either

Thank you

"Right," says the spider. "If I hold this bit here and that bit just.... there, and then I... Dammit! I've dropped a stitch somewhere!"

Great shot! Looks as though she's trying her hardest to keep that web from untangling on her

they certainly ar facinating to watch. It amases me how strong these webs are (bar encounters with tripods) and the distances they can cover. We had one that use to set up her web between two palm tress about 2 meters apart. Always deserted by morning though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GeodeLady In reply to zedgrafix [2005-11-03 14:34:16 +0000 UTC]

I agree very strong. On the occasion I had the misfortune of walking through one of their webs I seriously thought it was a black widow web (a black widow web has a distinct feel and are very strong hard to get off of you from the stickiness of it) which has made me go into complete frenzy mode. I find it amazing too how big they can get and the distance covered by them. I still haven't figured out how they get that first line going attaching from one object to another at such a distance. Truly an intrigueing creature.

It certainly does... i was looking forward to time slowing down for us now.... yeah right! Maybe in a couple of years ... seem to have been saying that for a few too.

We were without our lights for a few days ealier last week... it was nice with just the lamps on & the candles all going, it felt much more homely... if you know what i mean.

Your welcome
