Description Mono Lake is an inland lake with no outlet, so the water is saltier than ocean water. The tufa towers form when freshwater springs flow into the lake water. They're made of calcium carbonate, the same stuff that goes into cement and chalk. Millions of migratory birds depend on the brine shrimp and brine flies that grow here.
