I was feeling in the mood for something Lovecraftian. My favorite story is actually "The Color Out of Space", but I haven't yet figured out a way to Photoshop a color no one has ever seen before.

The title makes me think Cthulhu is just picking up groceries there. Like someone from out of town comes, and suddenly sees that behemoth coming, wondering why no one seems to be alarmed. "Oh thats just Cthulhu. He comes around every week to pick up some milk and eggs." The thought amuses me.

This is so beautiful.. I especially like the blue-ish lights from the windows. And the contrast between that creepy creature and the warmth from the lights.

I'm not sure immediately regenerating, then killing and/or driving everyone on that boat to insanity counts as defeat. Still they delayed it, that's still pretty impressive considering the scale.

Very creepy and attractive at the same time. I find myself thinking things like 'approaching storm' when I study it. I especially like how you made the Big C indistinct. Some of those folks are saying to their companions, "Ah...I don't think that's just a cloud!"

Regarding "The Color Out of Space", why don't you start off with...
I) The meteorite itself,
II) the well,
III) or the effects it has on the livestock, insects, plants, humans, etc.?
Have you seen the film Die Farbe? It means The Color and is an adaptation of the story. It was filmed entirely in black and white...except for the Color. The Color was added with a computer and was violet. So it looked truly unearthly in shots like this: www.brutalashell.com/wp-conten…

Wow, cool! Actually there IS a way to visually represent a nonexistent color: create two identical images, but make the Color different in each image. The viewer crosses their eyes to combine the two images into one, and the colors merge together to create not their midpoint on the color wheel, but an impossible color hybrid.

Very cool -- the architecture of the buildings makes me think "Lovecraft meets Godzilla"
(Color out of space couldn't be photoshopped, and a digital camera couldn't image it, because the digital color range is too restricted, you'd need to use something like Kodachrome II to record it and they're not making it anymore...)

I was trying to go an unidentifiable style of architecture - a little Japanese, a little modern, a little "monastery built into a cliff" - something crazy Cthulhu cultists would put together on their Pacific island.
I don't think any medium could truly capture the Color out of space - only the imagination.

Now that is an impressive beast right there. I love how despite the clear skies and how impossibly huge that thing is, you still can't really make out any details of it's body. There are some wings that shouldn't be able to lift it and tentacles everywhere but when it comes to the body all you can see are the two piercing eyes glaring down at you.
You also did a nice job on a lot of the details throughout the piece. The waves crashing against the shore, the little followers walking out towards the summoning and the sky. The sky in particular is great, with the greenish tints making everything more unsettling.

I think a lot of the genius of Lovecraft is maddeningly leaving things to the imagination. What is almost seen is often more terrifying than anything clearly visible. When you insert something too horrible for the human mind to bear into a realistic setting, I think leaving it a thing of shadow is a good way to depict it.
