What rytango said - you have a great eye for compositions, which I suppose is the most important part of the painting. I know what you mean, too, about trying to go brighter. I am having the same problems keeping my stuff from getting too dark/dreary, and maintaining a high contrast. Keep it up - you're constantly improving!
