Here's the water-based color application on Slice One: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made. The foundation was laid down with Mauve gouache, followed by a layer of Iris Blue water-dye. Over that, I started to apply the actual color, working out the pallett as I went. I've always had a general idea of what I wanted for this piece, but that has changed as I refined it in the process of working out what areas I would apply each color in. The color is laid down very lightly, building the intensity of the hue not through thickness, but from layer after layer of tinting. It's a slow process, but one that I've used for many years with water-based materials.

This will act as a map for me as I go in with the Prisma colored pencils. There will be plenty of opportunity to explore the different "regions" of the image, from the turquoise blue/lavender areas along the neckline, to the reds and purples along the back and middle of the head. There's even room for a little green! Lots of areas for interesting "splashes" of color to bounce off of each other and to "pop" to high-lights to give the piece depth.

The face will be more delicate, with subtle tones, from beige to pinks and oranges, blending into white on the nose and chin.

With all four of the images, a part of the composition will be monochromatic (such as the back ground, in this piece). These areas will be treated like the color areas, in that the tones will be established with a variety of graphite pencils (instead of color) to bring out the depth.

On a technical note, the scan had a tendency to polarize the coloring a bit. The original is a lot more blended and smooth at this point. Hopefully, the finished colored pencil version will show the intricacy of color a bit more. I'll work on that.

Thanks, ID! Which causes me to work too slowly for my own good! Btw, the finished piece will be posted in the near future!

This is the last bit of water based mediums. Now, I'll try and "pop" the colors with the Prisma colored pencils! More to come.

Thanks, Doc! I'll be finishing off the piece with a lot of colored-pencil work. More on that later.

Thanks! I like that! Coral. I'm just beginning to explore the nature of structure with the color. At first, the color scheme was a lot brighter (and still may turn that way), but I was afraid she would start to look a bit parrot-like, and that was not my intent at all. The colors took shape after about the 4th layer, when they had enough intensity to suggest patterns. Of course, the horizontal sections remained in shadow. There's going to be a lot more beiges, ochers and pinks the closer one gets to the face. All, fading into white.
