Description [ OTHER HALF OF THE TRADE ]

Yes, 'tis ANOTHER art trade! I do way too many of these, but this one was really worth it as it's a trade with a local Capetonian artist friend who's only recently joined up on DevArt. I know him from a South African manga/anime oriented forum . Hell, we've even met in person (4th frame, Darkwolf) : T

Anyways, his request was to draw the main character of his manga as a tundra wolf. The character's name is Ash and he's a Necromancer, thus the title (I'm sure yeh can figure it out from there).

I'm not sure what originally inspired me to do a rain scene like this, but once it got started the thing snowballed from there... ended up spending A LOT of time doing the rain effect, but hopefully it looks like it was worth it ^^

I like this one, he's fluffy and wet and I want to hug him...
I'm very original with my comments so I will apologise in advance...

I usually base my approval of three factors:
1. Is the character undead?
2. Are they cute and huggable?
3. If covered in chocolate, will they be more appealing?

Errr ummm I do value artistic talent as well...honest...
*runs off for some chocolate*

Original comments are always welcome! They're certainly better than the one-liners... aka "cute!" or "lol!" ... or "cutelol!"

Hmm, yeah I don't think I've ever covered points 1 and 3 before, so I've gotta make up for it with 2

Good colouring, but the rain needs a bit of work as it looks more like mist!

You can add grain and then just use motion blur( i think, not too sure right now ) to get a more rain like effect

It's stil a good image

Thanks boet, I was kinda hoping to create a misty effect though
I will definitely keep your advice in mind for future creations of clearer-looking rain, I hadn't thought of using those suggested effects

OMG!
Damn that's cool!!!

I'm really 'wowed' by this pic...
I know your used to cartoony humorous pics... so I was wondering how you were going to pull of a 'serious' pose... but damn... that took the cake!

The rain really goes great with the pic (and with the characters mood ).
I know rain (and the atmosphere of rain) is pretty tricky to get right... but it looks like you had no trouble with it

You nailed the outfit and stuff perfectly!
But yeah... sorry 'bout the hair... it's tricky for me aswell to draw it...
But it seems you got it right (even managed to give it that 'wet' effect from the rain )

Great job man!
I'm really glad to see my character in your style... it's awesoma-la-rific!!!

Gibbo18 In reply to AkumaWolf [2006-11-26 20:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, I may be used to cartoony pics but I certainly started out learning with the serious stuff

Dunno exactly what inspired the rain, but your character just seemed to demand it!

Awesome, I just hope I got the tundra wolf part right... I couldn't do him completely white because the rain wouldn't have been visible on his fur then. Heh, the hair did take some time to get right though, lots of redrawing there : T

Many thanks Wolf-san, your ref-sheets were a huge help, so much so that I'm sorry I didn't have any of my own to help you with Kyla... though by the looks of your pic yeh didn't need any help there!

ROFL I had to go through about 100 deviations to get to yours dude another 500 to go (not lying here ) Anyways this is one great pic dude, did you get reference from darkie or did you compose the pic like this yourself?

Gibbo18 In reply to ZeroExile [2006-11-25 11:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm glad yeh made the effort to check it out! I know a lotta folks in that situation would quietly click 'delete all' XD

I got reference from mr Wolf with regards to his character's suit (check out the description on the pic and you'll find a link to that reference), otherwise I had to create the wolf version of this character m'self, as per his request. The rain was an odd bit of inspiration, dunno quite what influenced me to draw it

Gibbo18 In reply to Habilis-Orian [2006-11-20 16:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, how to shorten this. Lezee...

Rain: (layer behind character) Went crazy wild with at least 5 different shades and variations of blue, on two layers, all slightly lighter than the base blue background. Then used smudged tool and eraser to smudge straight up and down all over the place until it started looking somewhat rainy. The lightest blue was carefully smudged to simulate a raindrop, then cloned around the place in different ways.

Rain spatter on character: (new layer) Very light blue line in places where rain would bounce off character. Threw in some pure white dots, then used eraser and smudge tool again, 'bouncing' up and down with smudge to get desired effect, finishing by erasing close to the character to give space between him and the effect.

Ground Mist (caused by hot ground): (new layer above character) Choosing light grey, used a large brush that simulates marble texture to spread around the character's feet, then used smudge tool in a swirly fashion to create a mist-like effect. Lowered the opacity of the layer to desired effect.

Rain Puddles: Another brush tool that creates semi-circle swirls, used different sizes, copy-pasted and flipped some around... also put on a seperate layer and lowered the opacity of the layer to about 20

Rain riverlets on character: New layer, white brush, eraser, smudge, happy

It definitely looks like he's in the rain and everything. I think maybe you could have done a bit more but, that might not have fit with the style. This looks very nice, very well done. I especially like the fade towards the bottom.
