Any advices for a WarHammer noob who has trouble making the paint/details look good?

Well, unfortunately I don't see any examples of your work in your gallery, so I can't give any specific advice heh. But the basics are pretty much, keep your brush clean, use things like pliers, or pin vices attached to paper clips stuck in the feet to give yourself a handle to hold while painting. For highlights, just do it kind of logically, where would the light hit? Is there something in particular you're having a problem with?

Well, that's because I used to be a lot more into it as a child, and I am trying to get into it again, and I want them too look better this time around then last time.
Pin vicers, pliers? Sorry, english is not my main language.
I always had problem with to much paint getting on things like skulls and just going over all the details, making them impossible to see.

This [link] is called a pin vice, if you drill a small hole in the models foot you can use it as a handle to hold it, like this [link]
If too much paint is the problem, then just remember not to do that. When I stepped up my painting from what I used to do it was really clear to me the problems with what I did and just by paying attention to not do the same thing I was able to improve. Also, try using a smaller brush, the smaller the brush the less paint you can get on it. I maybe only get 2-4 strokes of paint from a single dip in the pot try dipping less paint.

To be honest, I think I'll just paint the leg I'm holding for last.
You said something about painting them first with white, then a diffrent set of greens, how does that work?

Sure thing, that's what I do, but some find it hard to maneuver.
Well, MY green is abnormally bright I think, because I first use a matte white spray paint to base coast all my models, this gives a brighter finish since all warhammer paints let through a small amount of colour from previous layers. The Ink that I use, apposed to the new washes, really don't make my models look any better, it was just what I started using so I keep doing so to make them all look the same. If you did not previously use washes, I HIGHLY recommend doing so, they are the easiest and fastest way to step up your painting game.

Washes are used to put a darker colour into the corners of a model, check out this page [link] it explains how to use them

I'll just try to make sure I don't have to much paint on the... Brush.
It gets a little to advanced for me...

Heh, it is really the easiest thing in the world, just pick a darker colour from your base colour, and paint it over everything that needs it. Let it dry and you've got something with darker corners then what you started with.

Holy crap! How did he do that, base coat it with white?!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Gibbtall In reply to Skillns [2011-07-13 14:53:05 +0000 UTC]
Yes he did, the first two pictures are the model spray painted white with the basic colours painted ontop. Pictures 3 and 4 are with the washes added onto that. Pictures 5 and 6 are the model spray painted white with just the washes on top, skipping the base colour painting.

[link] these are washes, they are a group of "paints" that you can buy anywhere you buy regular warhammer paint, they are pretty much liquidy paint.

Normal warhammer paint is water based, so are the washes, but they are much more pigment. Think of it like a wood stain, rather then actual paint.

No problem, if there is a Games Workshop near you, the people working there would be much better at talking about specific issues for you.

What colors did you use to get your green color? I love the way it pops. Currently painting up a Salamanders army right now.

The trick is to base coat with white instead of black. I then go over the whole thing with Snot Green, then a wash with Green Ink (Which isn't available anymore, but Thraka Green would do the job), repaint all but the recesses with Snot Green, then highlights in Scorpion Green.

Really nice! The highlighting is superb (I really need to work on that!) and the paint nice and clean!

^.^ thanks a ton. I think my highlighting is a little harsh compared to some people, since I don't blend at all, but I like the brightness of my Sallies.

oh hey, if you didn't know, you can go onto their website and get mod packs to make your army real salamanders, with the shoulder pads, emblems and all that fancy stuff... or at least they have that with Dark Angels.

Heh, the only salamander stuff forge world has released are terminator pads, which I intend to put on my close combat termies if I ever get to them, and some rhino and land raider doors. They have yet to make anything special for tactical marines sadly.

I mean, games-workshop.com, they've got blister packs just for modifying your spacemarines... they might not have them for the salamanders though, IDK

These look pretty good. I do like the salamander color scheme overall.
If I might make a suggestion though? Take the green you used for a base on the plate armor, thin it WAAAAAY down, and go over your highlights lightly (like almost a drybrush) on the edging, that'll take some of the stark contrast out, and give it a more natural highlight. Then if you want to highlight it again, do it for any edging facing up (as if the sun were above it) and just do a super-thin edging in your original highlight on any edge the sun would hit.
I just setup my DA account, I'll post a couple of testors so you can see my stuff too.
Good work.
